Henry Cavill Out as Superman, New Reboot Film In The Works
In a shocking turn of events after Henry Cavill’s surprise return as Superman in Black Adam, James Gunn has officially announced that Henry Cavill will no longer be playing Superman in the DCU.
Henry Cavill wrote in a statement that “After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life”. Gunn additionally revealed that he was working on a new Superman film that took place at the beginning of his career at the Daily Planet, and would include the first meeting between Superman and Lois Lane.
More Details About DC Slate Emerge
Gunn also revealed Ben Affleck has been in talks with Warner to potentially direct a film in the DC franchise. Based on his remarks about the role though, it is unlikely he will return to star as Batman.
It has also been revealed by The Hollywood Reporter that Ta-Nehisi Coates’s Superman film is still in active development. Of course, with the head-spinning rate of announcements and cancellations, even official confirmation does not mean any of the projects will happen, but Warner Bros. Discovery seems confident in its choice of Gunn.
WBD Reveals More Cancellations on the Way
The cancellations have also hit Warner Bros. as a whole as well. In a securities filing, WBD has revealed that they plan on taking write offs for an additional billion dollars of cancellations of content, up from between $2 billion and $2.5 billion.
This comes as they announce that they are planning on removing more content from their services, including hit show Westworld, in order to sell this content to other streaming services. This additional billion dollars in cancellations means that this already brutal slash of projects is just going to get worse.
Director Patty Jenkins Responds to Wonder Woman 3 Rumors
Patty Jenkins has responded to the reports of the cancellation of Wonder Woman 3, stating that “I never walked away. I was open to considering anything asked of me. It was my understanding that there was nothing I could do to move anything forward at this time.”
Previously, it was under speculation that Patty Jenkins had removed herself from the project, going as far as to send Warner Bros. studio head Michael DeLuca a dictionary definition of “character arc”. James Gunn somewhat responded to that accusation in a response to Jenkins, stating that “I can attest that all of Peter and my interactions with you were only pleasant and professional.” Of course, Gunn’s response notably only mentioned correspondence between himself, Peter Safran, and Jenkins, which does nothing to combat the reports about DeLuca.
