A cultural icon of the 1950s, James Dean was known all over for his looks and wild lifestyle. Having starred in only three major movies, one would think Dean would become a forgotten figure in Hollywood. But that hardly seems to be the case as speculations related to his life are still as alive and as wild as the person himself. Best known for his intense acting, there is no doubt that the East of Eden star was a genius performer.
As we slowly near 70 years of his death, Darwin Porter’s biography of the illustrious actor’s life makes some wild claims about his lifestyle. Talking about his life, Porter says,
“He would sleep with anybody to get ahead. He had three or four conquests each week and though he wasn’t the most handsome man, didn’t have a great body, had two false front teeth, and was often rude, women and men threw themselves at him.”
Known to have been involved with Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Judy Garland, Paul Newman, Spencer Tracy, and countless others, Porter further claims that the Rebel Without a Cause actor was omnis*xual, who looked for opportunistic affairs for Hollywood success. Porter’s claims do seem too far-fetched, but seeing the life Dean led, they cannot be outrightly dismissed.
Despite Immense Success, James Dean Was A Troubled Man
James Dean was an incredible method actor, but his inspiration majorly lay in his troubled past. Abandoned at the age of 9 by his father after his mother’s death, Dean took his troubled past and inner vulnerability to add emotional depth to his characters. Despite the stardom, the controversial star remained as lost as ever. Porter writes,
“But despite all his success he remained a tormented soul and never escaped his inner demons.”
While the vulnerable and broken star made ‘love to some of Hollywood’s greatest beauties‘, Dean could not leave his insecurities behind and had a violent streak in him that overtook him at any moment. Some even claimed that he would be violent with his girlfriends, self-harm, and become threateningly violent.
Described as a ‘thrillseeker with a love for speed’, Dawrin Porter claims that James Dean
“liked to tempt death so that he could experience life all the more.”
How true this statement is, we may never know for the star passed away on September 30, 1955, in a car crash so brutal that it became difficult to even identify him.
