Whether it’s the famous detective Sherlock Holmes or the Master of the Mystic Arts Doctor Strange in the MCU, the actor has left an indelible mark on the film industry with his work and has also landed two Academy Awards nominations for Best Actor.
And in 2018, the actor stepped into the shoes of a superhero for a Deliveroo cyclist who was being mugged by a group of four men. Cumberbatch intervened and bravely defended the food delivery service worker.
Benedict Cumberbatch Saved a Deliveroo Rider
Popular for starring as Sherlock Holmes in the mystery crime drama and Doctor Strange in the MCU, Benedict Cumberbatch became a topic of conversation in 2018 for saving a cyclist from a group of muggers. The actor defended a Deliveroo rider, who was being assaulted by four men, who smashed him over the head with a bottle.
The British actor, who was reportedly headed to a club with his wife, Sophie Hunter, in an Uber, spotted the incident and jumped out of the Uber to help the cyclist. The incident took place around 221B Baker Street, the residence of Cumberbatch’s one of the most popular characters, Sherlock Holmes.
The Uber driver, Manuel Dias, revealed the incident to The Sun, saying, “The cyclist was lucky. Benedict’s a superhero.” The Marvel star reportedly jumped out of the vehicle, yelling, “Leave him alone,” before he dragged them away from the Deliveroo rider.
The Uber driver also shared that he did not recognize the Hollywood star until he intervened in the mugging. “He seemed to know exactly what he was doing. He was very brave,” he said. Deliveroo later thanked The Courier star for defending their employee via a Tweet.
Benedict Cumberbatch Insists He’s Not A Hero
According to The Sun, if Benedict Cumberbatch had not intervened, the Deliveroo rider would have been seriously injured. The Uber driver revealed that after saving him, the 47-year-old actor asked the rider if he was okay and hugged him.
The courageous, brave, and selfless act of the actor was praised by many, including the delivery service. When asked about the same during an interview, the actor insisted that he is not a hero, saying, “There are real-life heroes out there, and I’m not one of them.” He further implied that it was his responsibility, as he stated, “I did it out of, well, I had to, you know . . .” The reports also stated that cops confirmed the incident and that they were called to an assault on a delivery rider.
