While he is one of the best martial arts actors in Hollywood of today’s date and age, Jackie Chan had to practice a lot of perseverance and discipline to reach this high position. Sharing his extreme journey to becoming a master of mixed martial arts, the Rush Hour star revealed how his teacher used to stop them mid-practice while they were in the middle of a move, and made them stay in that position for at least half an hour without making a sound.
He further revealed how his teacher used to punish him when he made a mistake. He said,
“You know my teacher, how he [used] to hit me? [With] a piece of wood. [Whacks wood on his palm] No yelling. No ‘ugh’! No [withdraws hand]. No Tears. And [slaps palm again]. The first one, okay. I just do this [groans]. Then he said: Remember, okay? Don’t do it next time, okay? Then the second one [repeats emotion]. [Teacher said] No. Again. He wanna hit me ten times! But each time, it’s again and again. After three times, my tears came out. [And he’s like] No! Wipe [tears]. Okay. Start all over again.”
He had to go through this merciless beating by his teacher day and day again until he finally learned discipline through pain.
“At the end, I looked at him and just [gave him my hand and he whacked my palm]. One, two, three, four… and ten! [I didn’t make any sound throughout!] Then I looked at him… oh, the hate [in my eyes]!”
Nonetheless, despite being brutal, his everyday training of pain and perseverance helped him become one of the best and most renowned martial artists in the industry.
Jackie Chan Created A Whole New Movie Genre Of Comedic Kung Fu By Being Himself
Though all those years of hard work practicing discipline with his teacher coupled with his talent paid off in making him one of the most widely acclaimed stars of all time, Jackie Chan revealed that he created his own sub-genre of comedic kung fu just by being himself. Comparing his movies to those of Bruce Lee, he said,
“After Bruce Lee died, the director asked me to become an actor. I said, ‘Look, why don’t we change everything opposite of [what] Bruce Lee [did]? I can just be myself. Just me, Jackie Chan.’ So the producer said, do whatever you like to do. Change. No Bruce Lee, comedy. When Bruce Lee kicks high, I kick low. When Bruce Lee [throw] up the punch, ‘Ah’, I do just [punches] ‘ow!’ You know just like [a] normal human being. So, in the movie, I do the same thing. Everything used in the movie is my real life.”
And just like that, depicting his real-life situations in his movie, Jackie Chan created exclusive superhit martial arts movies that were the perfect combination of action and comedy, loved by fans to date.
