What kind of game is Elden Ring?
Elden Ring is a Soulslike game developed by Japanese developer FromSoftware, who pioneered and popularized the genre. It is set in an open world, which is full of enemies to fight, secrets to uncover, items to find, sights to see, and much, much more. Like all games in the Soulslike genre, combat is characterized by its immense difficulty, with player characters dying in just a few hits even to the weakest of enemies.
FromSoftware has a history of developing such games, such as Demons Souls, the Dark Souls trilogy, Bloodborne, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Elden Ring is the latest in that long line of games, being the first one to feature an open world, whereas the others were set in a semi-open world with interconnected areas.
Elden Ring is also notable for the involvement of George R.R. Martin, the author of the A Song of Ice and Fire books, which were adapted by HBO into Game of Thrones. Martin wrote some of the lore and worldbuilding of the game, but not the plot.
