Hollywood is polished, glamorous, and perfect. But sometimes there are chinks in its perfect exterior that makes fans laugh out loud. One indent with Zendaya and Tom Mescal highlighted just that and reminded people that actors can be awkward and mess up even during serious award functions.

As for Mescal, he wasn’t selected in any of the categories even though he was nominated for BAFTA and an Academy Award for his Aftersun movie. The trouble happened before they presented the award, precisely while they were going up the stage. When Zendaya and Mescal were walking towards the podium, the actor attempted to hold the Dune star’s hand.

But the actress instead showed him her elbow. This weird moment showed that the two of them were not on the same page. Ultimately, there was no hand-holding, but thankfully, the two of them did successfully present the award to Jessica Chastain for her role in George & Tammy. However, that small moment of awkwardness went viral and fans of the two were busy dissecting what it meant.

Fans have several theories about why Zendaya turned down Paul Mescal’s attempt at holding her hand at the 2023 SAG Awards. Some think that she offered her elbow so that they could lock elbows and could walk up to the podium like that. One comment on Tiktok read, “I think she went for the arm hold but they couldn’t figure it out.” It probably would have been a more friendly gesture rather than hand-holding that could have been interpreted by fans as romantic.

Others are of the view that she outright rejected him because she is dating Tom Holland and didn’t want to send the wrong message to anyone. However, most think that it was likely a case of miscommunication. Whatever the reason might be, most videos of the incident show that Mescal was upset or nervous after the actress swerved during the hand-holding attempt by him.

One fan commented on the Irish star’s facial expression after the incident and said, “He looks so embarrassed.” Overall, the small drama lit up social media with plenty of fans making memes. Here’s to hoping that it didn’t affect the friendly relationship between the two actors.
