The name Johnny Depp conjures us with images of charisma, versatility, and a fondness for portraying eccentric roles. Captain Jack Sparrow, a character from the Pirates of the Caribbean film series, is one of his best-known performances. Depp’s portrayal of the charismatic pirate in the popular franchise, which is noted for its adventurous exploits and supernatural undertones, has played a significant role in its global success.
However, many people might be surprised to learn that Johnny Depp has never seen any of the Pirates of the Caribbean films, even any movies in which he is involved. According to, Alice Cooper, one of his closest friends, Johnny Depp does not enjoy watching his own films.
Johnny Depp Hasn’t Seen His Own Movies
Music icon Alice Cooper revealed that Johnny Depp never watches his own movies. Cooper said:
“Johnny is a good guitarist and in a way he would have been happiest doing that, playing side of stage in a band and not having to deal with the level of attention he gets. He just happens to be a really good actor. He has never seen a single one of his movies.”
In a 2009 appearance on The Late Show With David Letterman, Depp said he never watches his own films.
“In a way, you know, once my job is done on the film, it’s really none of my business,” Depp explained. “I stay far away. If I can, I’d try to stay in as profound a state of ignorance as possible.”
The desire to enjoy one’s own work on the big screen might seem normal for an actor, yet Johnny Depp has constantly avoided seeing any of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. This peculiar choice has perplexed both fans and fellow actors.
Johnny Depp Revealed He’s Never Seen Pirates of the Caribbean
The Pirates of the Caribbean film series, produced by Disney, began in 2003 with Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. We were introduced to Captain Jack Sparrow in this movie, who would go on to become one of Johnny Depp’s most famous and enduring roles.
Depp reprised his role in each of the franchise’s other five movies over the following decade. The series became a massive success, grossing billions of dollars worldwide and turning Captain Jack Sparrow into a cultural icon.
It is revealed by Johnny Depp that he hasn’t actually seen Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.
“I didn’t see it … But the film did pretty well, apparently. And they wanted to keep going, making more. And I was fine to do that,” the actor said in the court, talking about his initial days as an actor while testifying in his $50 million defamation case against his ex-wife Amber Heard.
“It’s not like you become that person, but if you know that character to the degree that I did – because he was not what the writers wrote, so they really weren’t able to write for him… Once you know the character better than the writers, that’s when you have to be true to the character and add your words.”
Depp added that he came to acting by accident.
“I was no means to be an actor … But the fact that these people were going to pay me a ludicrous amount of money … It was $12,800 per week. I had never seen that kind of dough in my life.”
With such distinct traits, Depp joins the likes of Meryl Streep, Jared Leto, Joaquin Phoenix, Javier Bardem, and Reese Witherspoon, who make a habit of avoiding their films.
