No matter what you think of Arnold Schwarzenegger, he has had a life full of memorable moments. At the age of 76, the actor, bodybuilding icon, and former governor of California appears to be taking things at ease. Last year, he narrated to Jimmy Kimmel a prank played on him by his friend and co-star Danny DeVito 29 years ago when they were filming Ivan Reitman’s film, Junior.
Schwarzenegger and DeVito first starred in Reitman’s Twins, a 1988 comedy movie about two brothers who learned that they are actually twins who were split up at birth. The two brothers were radically different from each other not only in appearance but also in personality; this comic misalignment is the key to the film’s brilliance.
After Twins, Reitman followed it up with another comedy film, Junior in 1994, which once again emphasized DeVito and Schwarzenegger’s physical attributes.
But appearing in comedies also had its drawbacks, and the legendary actor quickly discovered that working with someone like the Taxi star led to some pranks.
How Danny DeVito Tricked Arnold Schwarzenegger On Set
Arnold Schwarzenegger has had a long acting career, but he is best known for his roles in action films, which helped expand the genre. Even though he may have already been a well-known action star, as the 1990s went on, it became apparent that the actor, 76, was eager to expand his career beyond the action genre.
However, acting in comedies comes with some disadvantages. While appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Schwarzenegger was questioned about whether the two had ever played jokes on each other because DeVito “is a bit of a prankster”. When talking about the Get Shorty actor’s joke, the former Governor of California recalled:
“He said, ‘Arnold, you always give me cigars, and I always feel guilty. I have cigars; I want to give you a cigar.’ And I said, ‘Well, finally, Danny. This is really great.’ He gives me this cigar, a really long one, a beautiful cigar. Monte Cristo and Versario.”
Schwarzenegger went on to say:
“I put it in my mouth, light it up, he comes in with the lighter, we light it up, we’re smoking it, and it was fantastic.”
Given that the FUBAR star had given DeVito so many cigars earlier, he was probably happy to receive one from him at last. But it was not until the pair returned to the set that it was clear Schwarzenegger had smoked more than he had anticipated.
“We get back to the set; we continue on with the scene. I forget my lines. I was sitting there with the camera; it was a close-up of me. Danny’s behind the camera, and the director says, ‘Action’. I said, ‘What am I supposed to say…”
Arnold Schwarzenegger Was ‘Stoned out’ of His Mind
After having those cigars, Arnold Schwarzenegger had no memory of anything, as the former Mr. Universe recalled:
“They asked, ‘What did you do before lunch?’ I had totally forgotten everything. Find out that an hour and a half later, when I finally start remembering things again that Danny put some marijuana in the front of the cigar.”
The actor, who started weightlifting at the age of 15, continued:
“I was stoned out of my mind. I’m standing there in front of the camera, having forgotten everything.”
Although Danny DeVito‘s prank on his co-star was cruel, fortunately, the production was only delayed by a few hours. Later on, even Schwarzenegger’s co-star remembered what happened:
“We come to my trailer. We smoke a stogie. I take the stogie that I’m going to give him, and I stick a little weed in it. He smokes the stogie, smokes the weed. All of a sudden, we’re walking back to the set, and he’s holding on to me. He’s great fun to work with, but stoned? He is like, whoo…off the charts, baby!”
Although it has been a while since the two actors shared a screen, it seems from Schwarzenegger’s previous interactions with DeVito that they get along well.
Twins is available to rent on Apple TV, while Junior is streaming on DIRECTV.
