Back when Christopher Nolan‘s 2020 masterpiece Tenet was still in the making, the filmmaker was in for a surprise as he caught the film’s lead star, John David Washington, cheating – on his strictly set diet plan.

Appearing on The Late Late Show with James Corden, The Protagonist portrayer revealed how he had a hard time on the sets of Tenet.

“I was on strict dietary restrictions, but I was going crazy, and I needed my snacks,” Washington said.

Continuing, he shared the entire story with James Corden of how he was caught by Nolan red-handed right on the sets of the film.

“So there was a time in Estonia where I found these paprika flavored Pringles, and you can’t get them anywhere else in the world, so I was like I had to do it, and I stacked them up in my backpack, and I get on the elevator where I was staying and lo and behold, there’s Christopher Nolan, he saw me, he caught me with all these pringles in my bag. It was very embarrassing, and he started laughing at me and gave me a hard time the entire shoot.”

However, even paprika-flavored Pringles couldn’t get the former American footballer out of shape.

“Didn’t affect me, though, I stayed in shape. I was in some of the best shape of my life. I told him, paprika: where are you ever going to see flavored Pringles like this? And he agreed.”

Turns out, despite the uncompromising diet plan set for the lead star, both Christopher Nolan and John David Washington had something food-related that they truly agreed on!

Besides the strict diet, there was something else as well that Denzel Washington‘s son had to put up with while shooting Tenet: training to learn the rules of inversion. Sharing his training regime, he said on The Late Late Show with James Corden:

“There was about a two-month period of training. Two a day, sometimes three a day training,” he said. “Learning the rules of inversion, which our movie deals with, and temporal pincer movements. So what does that mean? Learn how to walk, talk, fight, block, snap necks, roll, jump, backward.”

Regardless, with all their hard work combined, John David Washington ended up making Christopher Nolan’s 2020 action/sci-fi movie a superhit: not only in fans’ eyes but at the box office as well.
