At the center of MCU’s success are the Russo Brothers, Joe Russo and Anthony Russo, who have directed some of the most pivotal and celebrated films within the franchise. Avengers: Endgame is one of the most anticipated movies released in recent years. Chris Evans as Captain America finally delivered the line “Avengers Assemble” in an iconic scene from the movie.
Hayley Atwell who played Peggy Carter recently in an interview with Josh Horowitz revealed directors Joe Russo and Anthony Russo’s confusion revolving around Captain America’s timeline.
Hayley Atwell about the Avengers: Endgame Revised Ending
The last shot of the movie, which revealed that Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) stayed in the past to be with Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell), the love of his life, was one of the issues the directors dealt with.
At the end of the film, Chris Evans‘ Steve Rogers could be seen handing Sam Wilson/Falcon, played by Anthony Mackie, his shield and possibly the mantle of Captain America.
In an interview with Josh Horowitz, Hayley Atwell said:
“I think that’s really smart of them to do. They didn’t want him knocking on her door and her answering it and her reaction because that seems to be an obvious but very literal. But there’s something for me when I watch it now more evocative by the fact that you just see the door open. The song’s already playing. It’s like they had that initial moment at the door just for themselves. So how that then lives in the audience’s imagination as they get to in the emotion of that for themselves, rather than seeing Peggy have that emotion and then you go in and they’ve already found each other.”
The writers of Avengers: Endgame, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely stated that in their opinion, there was no alternate timeline. However, directors Joe Russo and Anthony Russo had the polar opposite viewpoint.
The Revised Ending in Avengers: Endgame
Originally, the concluding moments of Endgame were designed to depict Captain America sacrificing himself to return the Infinity Stones to their proper places in time. In doing so, he would become trapped in the past and lead a life he missed out on, reuniting with his long-lost love, Peggy Carter. This poignant ending would have provided closure to Steve Rogers’ journey and allowed the character to finally find the happiness he deserved.
However, as the Russo Brothers delved deeper into the story and characters, they recognized an opportunity to make an even more profound impact on audiences. In an interview, the directors revealed that they felt the original ending was somewhat predictable and lacked the potential for a powerful twist.
Instead of remaining in the past, Steve Rogers chooses to live a full life with Peggy Carter, growing old and passing on his shield to Sam Wilson (Falcon), effectively anointing him as the new Captain America.
