Not everyone could put the three words: Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford, and marijuana in the same sentence together. The Star Wars duo who made the pithily worded exchange “I love you” and “I know” almost as famous as George Lucas’ creation itself, briefly ended up as lovers in the aftermath of filming the sci-fi epic. As expected, the fling was short-lived [3 months more or less] and it was more like an extramarital affair (on Ford’s part) than a romantic interlude.
So, to hear Carrie Fisher speak of Harrison Ford and his marijuana and how it almost convinced her to go sober decades after the incident had already happened acts as a shock factor to the audience’s senses, but in a good, nostalgic way.
Carrie Fisher Commemmorates Harrison Ford’s Marijuana
For someone who was introduced to hard substances at the tender age of 13, speaking of going cold turkey is a rare and celebratory moment. However, for Carrie Fisher, the reason for doing so felt almost compulsory and pertinent at the time. Recalling her extensive, and quite public, experience with drugs and alcohol, the Star Wars Princess claimed that one particular brand of marijuana had a fatal effect on her insomuch that she momentarily considered quitting.
The daughter of Debbie Reynolds (Singing in the Rain, 1952) and singer Eddie Fisher, she rarely hogged the public or media spotlight, and for the majority of her formative years was left feeling disconnected from the remainder of the world she was born into. As such, escape became her only comfort and marijuana was the closest thing to come to her aid.
“It ultimately turned out to be Harrison’s pot that did me in,” the actress claimed 6 whole years after she had first started smoking marijuana.
Carrie Fisher: The Whimsical Hollywood Starlet
After getting cast in Star Wars at 19, fresh out of drama school, the legacy child of Hollywood, Carrie Fisher came face-to-face with three men who would all outlive her and along the way, alter and impact her life forever. George Lucas, Mark Hamill, and Harrison Ford – all had an incredible impact on the actress’ life and legacy, helping establish her identity separate from her famous parents and their scandalous lives and earning her global acclaim and a pair of lifelong friends.
Carrie Fisher’s Star Wars career later not only helped her counteract her complicated relationship with fame and addiction but helped her gain an unprecedented level of support from all over the world from all walks of life. She spent the better part of her latter years fully committed to bringing art, culture, and theatre to the masses and speaking brashly and boldly about her struggles, both with addiction and her grueling mental health.
Star Wars original trilogy is available for streaming on Disney+.
