Harrison Ford could have been Robert Downey Jr.’s co-star
Avengers star Robert Downey Jr. worked in the dark comedy crime film Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. The film was directed by Shane Black. The star cast of the film included Val Kilmer, Michelle Monaghan, and Robert Downey Jr. The Iron Man star had given one of his best performances in the film. In the film, Downey Jr.’s character Harry Lockhart is stuck with a gay private investigator Perry van Shrike, played by actor Val Kilmer.
Reportedly the role was initially offered to ace actor Harrison Ford. The offer could have led to a big budget for the film by Warner Bros. But the condition was that Shane Black would land Ford in the film. However, the role was given to Kilmer, who was widely acclaimed for his acting skills.
Harrison Ford did not want to work with Robert Downey Jr.
As per reports, Harrison Ford was offered the role to work with Robert Downey Jr. but, he did not pick the project. There can be many reasons for refuting the role but one that stands out is that his girlfriend Calista Flockhart had previously dated the actor when they were working together on the sets of the American legal comedy-drama Ally McBeal. Ford was dating Flockhart when he was offered the role, but he turned it down.
As per fan speculations, the actor rejected the film because he was not comfortable with acting alongside the person who would create problems between him and his then-girlfriend. The real reason was never confirmed by the actor. The role went to Val Kilmer for the 2005 movie.
Downey Jr.’s wife, Susan Levin, is a film producer, and he first heard about Kiss Kiss Bang Bang through her. The actor recalled in an interview with Ian Winterton,
“She’s reading this script and laughing, and that’s unusual so I ask her what’s so funny and she’s, like, ‘Oh, nothing, just this Johnny Knoxville project.’ She keeps reading and laughing and she tells me, ‘The just had his severed finger that he had on ice stolen by a dog.’ ‘What was his finger doing in an ice bowl?’ ‘His girlfriend cut it off.’ ‘Why didn’t he go to hospital?’ ‘He did, but it got pulled off again by these two bad guys called Mr. Frying Pan and Mr. Fire.’ When I heard that I just had to be in this movie.”
The film was released in 2005 and grossed $16 million worldwide.
