Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is the long-anticipated sequel to one of the best movies, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. It features the same actors from the first movie with the addition of so many new and amazing Spider-People.
The Spider-Verse franchise has never been one to spoon-feed character details to its audience, choosing to instead leave it to be deduced and discussed by fans afterward. They tend to reward the viewers for paying attention by sprinkling in details here and there. One such fan went on to discuss a theory online that has quite a bit of evidence to back itself.
!! SPOILER WARNING for those who haven’t watched Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse !!
Is Gwen Stacy Transgender in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse?
This theory is about there being a possible hidden symbolism of Pro-Trans. This is shown through Gwen Stacy, who some fans think is transgender, both literally and metaphorically. The symbolism in question is her conflict with her father about being Spider-Woman. They went on to say that this conflict can be taken in the context of Stacy coming out to her father as a woman instead of Spider-Woman and him eventually accepting her.
“Whenever Gwen is struggling with her identity as Spiderwoman, especially in regards to “coming out” about it to her father, the colours of the movie become pink, blue, and white. As in her colour palette, and the palette of the background, change entirely to the trans flag.” One fan ranted, “Replace “Spiderwoman” with “woman” and divorce it from the context of the story, and it hits very close to home.”
This is supported by the ‘Protect Trans Kids’ poster in Stacy’s room and the trans flag pin on her father’s police jacket. There was also a mention of color pallets, stating that whenever this conflict is brought up, the color schemes of the shot turn to the colors of the trans flag, pink, blue, and white. These are also Stacy’s main colors.
How Do Fans Feel About The Possibility of Gwen Stacy Being Transgender?
After this theory hit Twitter, fans were quick to come online and share their opinions on the matter. Many fans were excited about the representation and the layer of depth that was added to her character so beautifully. Many others spotted this when her conflict with her father came up. They went on to say that regardless of whether or not this was intentional, it portrays the trans experience beautifully and shows how Gwen is the protagonist of this movie.
However, it is expected that with any progress of the LGBTQ+ community, there come people who are completely opposed to this idea and are angered by the mere thought of trans representation.
