Gods can be immortal, yet it does not mean they cannot be destroyed. Kratos is famously known for killing several deities in the entire God of War franchise, even the almighty Zeus and Ares. His face-off with Thor, as is every interaction with him, is a significant part of the lore.

The Myth Behind Thor’s Unhealed Wound Revealed

In God of War Ragnarok, Thor sustained a deadly injury from his battle with Kratos, a duel that was suggested by Odin. The long, grueling fight damaged everything around them, but nothing was more devastating than Thor getting hit by the Leviathan Axe.

Surprisingly, the fatal blow did not stop him from giving a strong fight. Thor did not kill Kratos, but the former left the battleground and warned his opponent of his return. The searing wound left Thor with a mark that he will bear for a long time.

The game did not give any narrative about his unhealed wound, though there is an explanation for this based on the past episodes. In God of War, Kratos hurled the Leviathan Axe into the Lake of Nine and disturbed the World Serpent, Jormungandr. It rose from the water, spitting the axe back to Kratos. It looked normal for a second, but the weapon has been covered in venom and ultimately altered its natural state.

After this, the players will be notified that the Leviathan Axe is now “Eitr imbued” which is never mentioned again for the rest of the game. It seemed like a no-brainer, but the event acknowledges an important event in Norse mythology.

The Battle Between Thor And The Midgard Serpent

Thor and Jormungandr are likewise enemies in both the video game and the myth, where their final showdown is found in the Prophecy of Ragnarok. Arising from his slumber, the wicked World Serpent, together with his siblings, Hel and Fenrir, reunite with Loki. After an arduous battle, Thor managed to kill Jormungandr, although he was drenched in the serpent’s venom, which became the cause of his death.

The unhealed wound is a brilliant allusion to Norse mythology and a hidden fact about the god of thunder in God of War Ragnarok. A deeper understanding of the myth allows fans to notice this small yet significant detail from the game.

God of War Ragnarok is available on PS4 and PS5.
