Tom Cruise is one of the most well-known actors in current times. He is in the film industry, having been part of one of the biggest action franchises to this date, Mission Impossible. He is known for going above and beyond in his role as Ethan Hunt, doing the majority of his extremely dangerous stunts himself.
While many might be impressed by this, author Charlie Higson is not a big fan of this aspect. Higson is known for writing a series of novels titled Young Bond about the iconic character of James Bond reimagined as a teenage boy who attends school in the 1930s.
Charlie Higson Compares Latest James Bond Movies To Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible
During an interview with The Times, Charlie Higson talked about how he feels about the current era of James Bond movies. The writer stated that he was not a big fan of the movies for one sole reason, they had lost their direction and strayed quite far away from what James Bond really is. He mentioned that he believes that the movies feel more like Tom Cruise‘s Mission: Impossible movies rather than Bond films.
“They overcomplicate him…The best ‘Bond films’ now are The Mission: Impossibles. There is no inner life, it’s just, ‘Woah! Look at that building — I’d love to climb it and blow things up.’”
He went on to say that these movies overcomplicate things by being more focused on larger-scale action, like climbing buildings or creating explosions, rather than intricate and entertaining fight sequences. While this opinion might not sit right with fans of Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible or the latest Bond films, a fact that is undeniable is that large-scale action tends to attract more viewers who are fans of the action genre. One of the biggest reasons for Mission: Impossible’s success is the extreme stunts and action sequences that Tom Cruise performs.
Charlie Higson Was Not Too Fond of Daniel Craig’s No Time To Die
Charlie Higson also went on to talk about the latest as well as Daniel Craig’s last movie as James Bond, No Time To Die. The Young Bond writer was not a big fan of the movie, being extremely critical about the fact that it was not a stand-alone movie and part of a series instead. He mentioned that he and his friend wanted to watch the film and because of this they were forced to watch other movies to understand the characters and some of the plot.
“I went to see No Time to Die with my oldest boy, Frank, who is 30, and he said, ‘That felt like a Bond film made by people who are embarrassed to make a Bond film.’ You had to watch two films in advance to know who such and such is and you think, ‘Oh, f*ck off with that.’ Make it a new mission each episode and let him be Bond.”
He added that he would have much preferred that the movies were not a continuous story, instead being a new mission in every film so that viewers could pick up any one of them and have a fun time. He went on to say that he missed the James Bond who would solve things with his fist and not overthink it.
