Every now and then, an actor occasionally expresses their dislike for a movie in which they previously starred. While it might be one of the more obvious questions a reporter can ask an actor, ‘Do you have any career biggest regrets?’ Sometimes, the response can be incredibly illuminating. In Charlize Theron’s case, Reindeer Games, also starring Ben Affleck, is her worst movie to date.
The Fast X actress has starred in a number of box office hits and delivered a number of iconic performances since getting her big break in the 1997 movie, The Devil’s Advocate. The actress has received numerous honors as a result of her outstanding performances, including an Academy Award for Best Actress for her work in the 2004 film Monster.
However, she does not take pride in all of her work, and thus, the 47-year-old actress finds it awkward to discuss her 2000 action crime thriller.
In a 2008 interview with Esquire, Theron discussed why she hated Reindeer Games while also sharing the one thing she enjoyed about the experience.
Charlize Theron’s Extreme Dislike For Her Movie With Ben Affleck
With her performance in the hit movie The Devil’s Advocate, Hollywood diva, Charlize Theron shot to fame in 1997. Since then, she has received numerous honors, among them an Academy Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, a Golden Globe Award, and many others.
Ben Affleck and the 47-year-old Fast X actress co-starred in the action crime drama, Reindeer Games in 2000. The plot of the movie centered on Rudy Duncan, who impersonated his deceased cellmate to meet his girlfriend, but later got involved in a robbery. For the unversed, the film, which was directed by the late John Frankenheimer, bombed both at the box office and in critic reviews.
Along with the audience and critics, one of the movie’s lead stars expressed the same sentiments about it. Yes, Charlize Theron eventually got around to discussing the movies she did not like during an interview with Esquire, and she specifically mentioned this 2000 movie. To quote her:
“Reindeer Games. That was a bad, bad, bad movie.”
Moreover, the Mad Max: Fury Road star did admit that she did not regret taking on the role. Why?
What Made Her Agree To Work On The Movie?
You do not often hear an actor talk so openly about a project they worked on, especially if it did not go well. However, Charlize Theron’s candor and openness in this situation are admirable and welcome. She obviously has a great deal of passion for what she does, and it is obvious that she will not be silent when something does not live up to her expectations.
So, despite her dislike for the 2000 movie Reindeer Games, Theron expressed her gratitude for the chance to collaborate with the late director, John Frankenheimer. Before he passed away in 2002, he completed one final full-length film, Reindeer Games.
But even though the movie might be terrible, “I got to work with John Frankenheimer,” the Bombshell actress said in reference to the illustrious director. She further shared:
“I wasn’t lying to myself — that’s why I did it. I mean, he directed The Manchurian Candidate, which is like the movie of all movies. F**k regret. Just f**k it.”
Well, actors are often compelled to accept roles that they may not particularly enjoy due to contractual requirements or for some other reason. However, it takes a true professional to commit and give a project, even if they are not completely interested in it.
Thus, Theron’s candor regarding her experience making Reindeer Games serves as a gentle reminder that we cannot always love everything we create. But when we do decide to commit ourselves to a task, we ought to do so with the same degree of rigor and professionalism. It is what separates the average from the extraordinary.
Anyway, you can watch Reindeer Games on Prime Video.
