Twitter CEO Elon Musk reportedly fired at least 50 more employees in the latest layoff controversy since he acquired the company last year. The business tycoon bought Twitter for $44 billion, after which he laid off several workers from core departments.
The latest dismissal happened on Saturday which involved employees from the engineering team, specifically those who specialize in advertising technology, digital infrastructure, and the main Twitter application. The news first broke out via The Information.

Sources with direct knowledge on the issue noted that the recent layoff marks the eighth round since Musk took over the company. The employees he reportedly fired included senior product manager Martijn de Kuijper. His startup business, a digital newsletter company, was purchased by Twitter in January 2021. De Kuijper woke up to the news and tweeted:
“Waking up to find I’ve been locked out of my email. Looks like I’m let go. Now my Revue journey is really over.”
The layoff also reportedly included avid Musk loyalists, according to Zoë Schiffer, who covers the company for Platformer. One of the unfortunate employees was Esther Crawford, chief executive of Twitter Payments. Crawford posted a tweet last November showing dedication to her job:
“When your team is pushing round the clock to make deadlines sometimes you #SleepWhereYouWork.”
Since Musk took the wheel in October last year, the company has lost 70% of its personnel, and its main source of income, advertising, has significantly plummeted. There were also several reports of glitches and technical problems. Earlier in February, Twitter users from North America were unable to send messages. Twitter Support team responded:
“Twitter may not be working as expected for some of you. Sorry for the trouble. We’re aware and working to get this fixed.”
The meltdown that has been happening within the company is quite the opposite of what Elon Musk promised. The business mogul, whose net worth is $190.8 billion, claimed that he saved Twitter from bankruptcy. In a meeting last November, Musk revealed that the company is losing $4 million per day after major advertisers pulled out their products.
As a way to save Twitter from falling apart, Musk attempted to generate revenue by launching Twitter Blue, a monthly subscription service that gives users a blue verification mark. It received mixed criticisms, and several troll accounts used it to impersonate celebrities and brands. According to The Information, only 180,000 users signed up for it, which has done quite a little to solve the company’s financial issue.
