Most directors in Hollywood work for hire under studios. They are hired not for their vision but for their reliability. However, some famous directors are so loved by cinema lovers for being auteurs. Though being an auteur makes a director’s work stand out, it can also be a curse in disguise. Fans think that sometimes what the directors are known for becomes something that weighs them down. They become their own enemies and start hurting their own films. Whatever the reason may be, their attempt to follow what made them successful makes them forget to edit themselves.
Wes Anderson
Known for his “love it or hate it” filmmaking style, Wes Anderson makes every character cartoonish, symmetrical, and speak in a deadpan manner. While he is one of the most famous directors of this generation and has won awards, some fans think his style can be a little hard to digest. They say that his style makes his movies interesting but can be overbearing. While most of his movies are well-acclaimed, The French Deposit, his recent work got mixed reviews. It was because the film leaned too much towards his style.
Peter Jackson
It is easy to say that Peter Jackson is one of those few famous directors who can make movies out of the smallest bit of lore. In fact, he already has done that. This can be both a boon and a bane. Because some believe that his films do not need to be as long as they are. His habit of extending movies beyond they should go ends up hurting his films. His movie King Kong. though it was one of the best movies, was so long, we all believe that some parts of the films could’ve been cut out.
Michael Bay
The unique style of Michael Bay is his brand of action, which a large group of audience love. However, some of his fans think that his constant use of dolly shots and explosions can be a little too much. The same camera movement shows up every now and then and loud explosions end up hurting his films. Even his new film “Pain and Gain” is filled with his signature dolly shots and explosions.
Judd Apatow
The director who popularised comedies based on real-life problems is Judd Apatow. He has made films on unplanned pregnancies, humdrum marriages, and more. It is fun to watch his movies as it is refreshing to see these issues presented in light-hearted comedy and genius one-liners. But certain fans think that he hurts his film by making them too long. You think the movie is about to end, and he introduces a new plotline and it goes on for another half hour. For example, Funny People was 2 and a half hours long.
J.J. Abrams
The go-to director of Hollywood when a franchise reboot is needed. J.J. Abrams is known for rebooting Star Wars and Star Trek. And though it was not really a reboot, Mission Impossible III was very refreshing to watch. But some fans think that Abrams insists on not overthinking things and this leads him to “underthink” important details and plot elements. It is true that too much exposition can ruin a movie, but so can not revealing enough. In Abrams’s case, he just does not care about revealing enough in his films and that really hurts them.
