Exciting News as PS4 Emulator in Development from Creator of RPCS3

Good news PC Fans, a PS4 emulator is in development which would see PS4 games and even PS5 games (possibly someday), playable on PC.

Recently on GitHub it was noted that a new emulator project had been logged from the creator of the PlayStation 3 emulator, RPCS3. And it’s intended target platform? Maybe unsurprisingly, the PlayStation 4.

Whilst this is exciting news for PC fans given the extensive back catalogue of games for the PS4, we have to dampen your expectations slightly. Hopes of getting your hands on epic PS4 titles like Bloodborne or The Last Guardian could be years away from reality.

And maybe more importantly, is that the most recent post on GitHub suggests that the emulator isn’t even being developed for Windows as yet. The post reads;

“This is an experimental emulator for PS4 written in C++ for Linux. It’s NOT possible to run any games yet. It’s also unknown when it will become possible,”

The previous PlayStation emulator, the RPCS3, has been developing over the last decade or so and there is still a third of games which are unable to perform efficiently.

The creator of the excellent PS3 emulator has an exciting new project

Given that the RPCSX is only just entering development, it may be at least a year before games get a start up, let alone operating efficiently. But fear not, there is a silver lining…

Not only is the PS4 emulator being developed by the same programmer who worked on RPCS3, they have also enlisted the help of colleagues who worked with the previous project. Also, the architecture of of the PS4 is x86 which is very similar to a modern day PC and this would mean that it would be easier to translate than what they encountered with the PS3 and it’s ‘hard to work with’ cell processor.

There will be a massive list of problems that developers will have to address; how to emulate the OS of the PS4, encryption and not forgetting to adding in the Windows Support (to name but a few!). But given the level of talent from the current pool of RPCSX developers, we don’t think it will be long before new contributors jump on board.

PS4 Emulator: What the Developer had to say

Could this epic title be coming to PC via a new PS4 emulator being developed?

Another thing to note about the development of the PS4 emulator is the PS5 support, with the two using pretty much the same architecture. And on RPCSX’s Discord Channel, developer DH had the following to say;

“PS5 has almost the same [firmware] and [hardware]. It will be emulator of PS4 only for long time. It seems good idea, but PS5 emulation is not in our priority, we will not upload any related with PS5 things soon … It will be emulator of PS4 only for long time.”

Whilst it is noted that this could be years away before being finalised, this is certainly exciting news for PC fans, given the fantastic titles which have been released for the PS4 over the years. Bloodborne fans take note!
