Jennifer Lawrence Responds To Comments On Her New Raunchy Film

Because of the movie’s theme, No Hard Feelings is rated 15 in the UK and rated R in the US. It also elicited comments from viewers, finding it offensive and inappropriate, especially the couple’s 13-year age gap. Jennifer Lawrence responds to these reactions via Sky News:

I think it’s time for just a good old-fashioned laugh, and it really is hard to make a comedy where you’re not offending people. Everybody in some sense will be offended by this film – you’re welcome.”

She noted the difference between comedies from the past and those of today:

Something we learned from the old-time comedies is mean comedy is not really funny. You know, making somebody feel bad about themselves – other than me making fun of me. But the way that we did it is fine, we figured it out.”

Her co-star, Andrew Barth Feldman, also agreed with the actress’ sentiments and believed that the film did a great job of pushing the limits while maintaining the essence of the story:

We need to be able to engage with being offended. There was and is like a big overcorrect because we realized there were so many things that we were joking about that we shouldn’t be, and I think this movie does a really good job of continuing to push limits while still engaging with the conversation that the things that these people are doing are wrong, and not a good idea.”

The movie served as Lawrence’s opportunity to explore her talent in acting for comedies. She made it clear that all she wanted was to find a project that could deliver this, and it so happened that when she read the script, the “sex with a young person” was part of it.

No Hard Feelings is based on a real advertisement that Jennifer Lawrence and director Gene Stupnitsky discovered on Craigslist. They found it really amusing and planned to translate it into a movie, but instead of focusing on the parents, they shifted the spotlight to Maddie and Percy.

Some fans expressed disgust and disappointment in the film, describing it as offensive and awfully boring. They also pointed out the age difference, which, if the situation is reversed, would absolutely put the older character in jail. Check out their tweets below:

The mixed reactions from fans and heavy criticism of the movie’s central theme might determine the fate of the film at the box office, whether it fares well with the audiences as a comedy that should not be taken seriously or a warning sign for filmmakers to be more responsible with the message they are sending out to the public.

No Hard Feelings is now showing in theaters worldwide.
