Between Ed Boon and the multitude of appearances at festivals over the last few months, excitement is growing to an all-time-high for Mortal Kombat 1, and that only increased after a stealth-drop of the new trailer last night.
Featuring Geras and Liu Kang, as well as a huge amount of fighting gameplay for the two characters, eagle-eyed fans have spent the last few hours pulling apart the trailer and pointing out bits we may have missed.

Who is that in the new Mortal Kombat 1 Trailer?
Titled the ‘Official Keepers of Time Trailer’, the trailer covered a considerable amount of information in a short period of time. Geras and Liu Kang spend their time in the trailer either fighting, showcasing their respective moves, or discussing between themselves the events of Mortal Kombat 1’s Aftermath DLC, and what it seems to mean for the universe going forward.
According to Geras, the peace that Liu Kang orchestrated may well already be compromised, with the new Fire God potentially causing issues with his meddling with the timeline “When you restarted history you altered the destinies of certain benefactors to neutralise them.”. That doesn’t sound good.

Clearly in his attempts to rid the universe of certain evils Liu Kang has made things worse, or changed them to a degree that things are not as peaceful as he intended. What this means for the characters going forward is anyone’s guess, but with the game releasing on September 19th, we don’t have long to wait.
Ed Boon points to an Unknown
Over on Twitter Ed Boon has done what he always tends to do, and thrown a little confusion amongst the mix with asking a simple question. During the three minute trailer there is a brief shot of some heroes walking through a portal, with the ever recognisable Johnny Cage and Liu Kang included.
However, the focus of the question was a nondescript character in the background, a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it appearance by… well, we don’t know. Judging by Ed Boon drawing this amount of attention to the character it’s going to be someone important to the story, or perhaps the final release as a whole.
Naturally, since the post fans have been trying to guess who it is, with some plausible, and not so plausible responses included.
That last guess is an especially interesting one, and semi-plausible as well, with the character in question not sporting any unique markings, it could well be a created character, meaning that for the first time in the franchise, we’ll be able to go to battle as characters of our design. That would be a particularly huge, if overdue gameplay mechanic introduced in a game that is already full of new features.
Conversely to all this, it could just be a placeholder of a character they’re not yet willing to show off, and by drawing attention to the nondescript nature of the character, Ed Boon is subtly hinting at more characters to come.
What do you think of this though? Is Ed Boon simply having fun with the fans of Mortal Kombat 1? Is this actually someone that is going to impact the game in a major way? Let us know in the comments!
