The Star Wars franchise created by George Lucas is widely considered to be one of the greatest franchises in the history of Hollywood. Beginning in the late 70’s, the various prequel and sequel trilogies have spanned over 3 decades and have succeeded in gaining cult status with audiences worldwide, thanks to Lucas’ creative vision.
The Star Wars films have also sparked off possibilities of spin offs and standalone films based on some significant characters from the franchise. Veteran producer Simon Kinberg who has been involved in the bankrolling of many X-Men films and other popular projects, spoke of his aspiration to write a Star Wars film based on one of the series’ interesting characters, Boba Fett. Unfortunately, this project did not materialize.
Here’s Why Boba Fett From Star Wars Did Not Get His Own Film
In the Star Wars franchise, the character of Boba Fett is one that is popular with audiences. One of the most feared bounty hunters in the history of the galaxy, Fett was an intimidating figure with his customized Mandalorian armor, deadly weaponry, and silent demeanor. Expectedly, the character was an ideal choice to be developed in greater detail in a standalone film.
X-Men producer Simon Kinberg who was also closely associated with Star Wars and George Lucas, wanted to write and direct a Boba Fett film. But the producer was unsure of the heavy duty content that could go against the aesthetics of a quintessential Star Wars movie. Comparing his ideas to Hugh Jackman’s Logan, Kinberg spoke to Polygon and said,
“I mean, it’s all pretty sci-fi, but I think “hard” is the right word. Tonally like Logan. On the edge of R-rated, though I don’t think you’d have a Star Wars movie that could be R-rated”.
Despite his plan not coming to fruition, Kinberg continued to be closely associated with the Star Wars franchise as a story and writing consultant for their various films and recalled his memorable experiences working with LucasFilm. Ultimately, Boba Fett got his own television miniseries, The Book of Boba Fett but fell short of expectations due to its poor character study.
Star Wars To Carve A New Chapter Beyond George Lucas’ Vision
In June of this year, LucasFilm president Kathleen Kennedy indicated that the next Star Wars movie will be moving on from George Lucas’ original vision for the franchise by reshaping his ideas to discover new narratives and characters. Speaking of the development of the new film Star Wars: New Jedi Order, which will usher in a fresh chapter in the Star Wars Legacy, Kennedy told Games Radar,
“And I think it offers just tremendous opportunity to introduce new characters and start with something fresh, because we culminated with what George [Lucas] was creating, and now we take all of that and move it to the next chapter.”
Kennedy was also quick to confirm that Geroge Lucas is and will always be the heart and soul of the Star Wars franchise. This new direction that LucasFilm will be taking, will honor its creator and his expansive vision while also moving forward to breathe new life through the introduction of characters and narratives.
