Imagine a completely new cast for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In that case, can you picture someone else playing Tony Stark/ Iron Man instead of Robert Downey Jr.?
Of course, there is no denying that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is arguably the biggest film franchise ever. Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) served as the face of the MCU for more than ten years, beginning with the 2008 release of Iron Man and continuing through the 2019 release of Avengers: Endgame.
We can all agree that the actors who were chosen to play the roles of the now-highly idolized Superheroes played a significant part in their global popularity. How would things differ if Kevin Feige, among other people, had chosen a different cast?
Many fans have questioned whether they will ever get to see their favorite ‘genius, billionaire superhero’ in action again since Downey Jr. said goodbye to the MCU’s Iron Man.
The actor lately discussed playing Iron Man again while promoting his upcoming series, Downey’s Dream Cars, and even cautioned another A-lister against accepting the role.
Robert Downey Jr Discussed Potential Iron Man 4 Return
If someone had met Robert Downey Jr. early in his career, they never would have guessed he would go on to become one of the most well-known actors. His stardom has continued to grow ever since he starred in Iron Man as Tony Stark and the subsequent Marvel films.
At Downey’s Dream Cars red carpet premiere last month, the actor, 58, was informed that Tom Cruise was eager to start working on a Tropic Thunder sequel. The extratv interviewer then slipped in a query about a potential fourth Iron Man movie:
“Tropic Thunder, Tom Cruise is saying he’d like to do a sequel. Would you do it?”
The Sherlock Holmes actor then cracked the following joke about his friend and fellow actor, Tom Cruise:
“Does he want to do that?! Tom, don’t take it!”
Although the actors have not collaborated in a while, Downey Jr. said he would be open to making another film with Cruise as he stated:
“Tom Cruise and I have not done a project yet together and that’s kind of a yes, and then we’d figure out what the title is.”
Nevertheless, Cruise once stated in an interview that he respects the Iron Man star far too much to accept the Superhero role, adding:
“I love Robert Downey and I can’t imagine anyone else doing that role and I think it’s perfect for him.”
Is There Going To Be An Iron Man 4?
Given that Marvel Studios has largely completed the stories it set out to tell with The Avengers, it is unlikely that Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man will make a significant comeback. As of 2019, neither the Oppenheimer actor nor Marvel had discussed plans for a fourth Iron Man movie, according to director, Jon Favreau.
Favreau made the following remarks:
“We haven’t talked about four. I’ve talked to [Marvel Studios president] Kevin [Feige] about it to see what they’re up to, but we definitely love working together and we love these characters. We talk about what it would be, and we always joke about the freak storyline which is the Happy Hogan storyline when he turns into a Hulk-like character. We joke about that. No plans, as of yet.”
The American filmmaker-actor, 56, further added:
“I mean, nowadays who knows with all the different platforms and the streaming service. I’m part of the new Disney streaming service. All of these new technologies are, new platforms are emerging, and all sorts of really cool… It’s not like network television or not like blockbuster films where everybody has to be, everything has to be made for all audiences. Now you could make specific material and content for specific groups.”
Well, fans are still hoping to see their favorite character in action in Avengers: Secret Wars (7 May 2027), even though a new Iron Man movie has not yet been announced by the studios.
You can stream Downey’s Dream Cars on Max, while all of the Iron Man movies are streaming on Disney+.
