Disney’s 1953 animated classic is still the most successful adaptation of the J.M. Barrie novel about the boy who wouldn’t age and the children who he whisks away to the magical world of Neverland. In the past, several studios have made their own adaptations of Peter-Pan on the big and small screen. This includes Steven Spielberg’s “Hook” starring Robin Williams and Joe Wright’s “Pan” starring Hugh Jackman. Despite a starry cast, neither of the two was any success at the box office.

The House of Mouse had planned to commence the production this year in April but was forced to reschedule it to March 2021. Though there were rumors of the film ending up on Disney Plus, like the “Lady and the Tramp” live-action adaptation, sources say the release is expected to be theatrical.

Disney is coming off a very strong year of live-action adaptations with its releases like Aladdin and The Lion King both grossing $1 billion at the global box office. The studio was so happy with the success of live-action Aladdin that it has already begun developing a sequel to the film. So far, they have remade The Jungle Book, Cinderella, Mulan, The Lion King, Lady and the Tramp, Aladdin,  Alice in Wonderland (which spanned the sequel Alice Through the Looking Glass), Dumbo and Beaty and the Beast. The story of Sleeping Beaty was also adapted, with a focus on the villain Maleficent, in Maleficent and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil.
