Sad news for fans of the National Treasure franchise – small screen adaptation Edge of History is not returning for a sequel. As per Deadline, the show has been axed just after one season. The series is an expansion of the franchise catered for Disney+ viewers.
National Treasure: Edge of History follows a young heroine who embarks on a journey to uncover the truth about her family. The show first aired on December 2022 with ten episodes that ran until February 2023.
Disney Pulls The Plug On National Treasure Spin-Off Series
Edge of History is the latest series on the Disney+ platform that only ran for one/two seasons before getting canceled. Big Shot, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, Diary of a Future President, The Mysterious Benedict Society, and Turner & Hooch are some of the unfortunate shows previously axed from the giant streamer.
The National Treasure spin-off features a young woman named Jess (Lisette Olivera) residing in Louisiana who discovers that her late father was part of a covert organization of treasure protectors. Jess sets off on an adventure of a lifetime to uncover her family’s secrets as well as save a lost Pan-American treasure.
The cast also includes Zuri Reed as Tasha Rivers, Jordan Rodrigues as Ethan Chao, Antonio Cipriano as Oren Bradley, Jake Austin Walker as Liam Sadusky, Lyndon Smith as Agent Ross, and Catherine Zeta-Jones as Billie Pearce.
Disney+ has struggled to launch original shows that are not under Marvel or Star Wars franchises as seen from the number of series canceled just after one season. This is nothing new, as the upcoming Indiana Jones show was also reportedly scrapped.
The developing series planned by Lucasfilm has been shelved after the critical failure of the Willow series, as Disney+ told the studio to focus on making Star Wars content. Even so, the company still scrapped many Star Wars spinoffs following Solo: A Star Wars Story’s box office bomb.
It seems that Disney anticipates that both series won’t do well for them. There is nothing wrong with being cautious as the streaming platform is also struggling with its own Marvel and Star Wars content. As the post-pandemic era has come, there has been a decline in viewership, and they are struggling to keep viewers invested in their projects.
Some Classic Movie Franchises Need To Remain In The Past
The original National Treasure film was directed by Jon Turteltaub with Nicolas Cage as the lead star. It was a beloved franchise from 2004 and was followed by the sequel National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets in 2007.
Indiana Jones is also part of the classic 2000s adventure movies that became part of everyone’s childhood. Despite the nostalgia, viewers would no longer want to revisit the same story with only an added modern twist.
The fan base is still there cherishing the good old films, but no one really asked for another shot. Seeing how other remakes based on existing franchises suffered financially because studios insisted on making more content that people are no longer interested in, Disney has a good reason for cutting their losses.
