Bold scenes in films can be challenging at times for several reasons. Firstly, these scenes often require actors to be physically close and intimate with each other, which can be uncomfortable for them, especially if they are not familiar with each other. Zac Efron experienced something similar while filming a love scene with esteemed actress Nicole Kidman, caused by a combination of mistakes.
In 2012, Zac Efron and Nicole Kidman worked together on the film The Paperboy, directed by Lee Daniels. The movie follows the story of a reporter’s investigation into a murder committed by a death row inmate, and Efron portrays the younger brother of the journalist who becomes entangled in the case.
What Made Zac Efron Uncomfortable While Filming With Nicole Kidman
The film’s on-screen romance between Efron and Kidman in The Paperboy was a standout aspect, culminating in a memorable love scene. However, director Lee Daniels failed to provide a clear endpoint for the scene, leading to uncertainty for both actors.
“Basically, I was with Nicole Kidman, and it was insinuated in the scene – it was mostly improv – that we were supposed to hook up, but the director just never yelled ‘cut,'” Efron told Buzzfeed. “Yeah, we went there. It was uncomfortable just because I didn’t know when we were going to stop. It was pretty cool, though, considering it was Nicole Kidman.”
Despite the awkwardness, the scene remained a significant and unforgettable moment for Zac Efron, particularly as it allowed him to work with someone he had long admired both as an actor and as a person.
Nicole Kidman Had Faith In Zac Efron’s Acting Abilities
Through their on-screen relationship in the film, Nicole Kidman learned a lot about Zac Efron’s abilities as an actor, which reinforced her belief in his potential for future success.
“He just has a lot of heart, Zac. As tough as he tries to be, he’s not tough. Which is a good thing. I mean that as a compliment,” Kidman told Awards Daily. “There’s no rough exterior to Zac. I think you really feel that on-screen. He just has to look, and you feel for him. I think he has a really strong power in what he doesn’t say… I think he’s going to have a really strong career. Because he’s also very open. That’s a beautiful thing in a man, is that openness.”
The Academy Award-winning actress acknowledged one particularly intense scene in the film where her character urinated on Efron’s character to aid in treating his injuries. The scene generated a lot of attention when the film was released, and while Kidman was surprised by its popularity online, she was pleased to have worked on it alongside Efron.
The Paperboy is available for streaming on Fubo TV. It can also be streamed on Plex and Pluto.
