At the Thursday box office, Sony’s holdover Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse lost to Pixar’s new animation film Elemental in a midweek upset. Elemental‘s opening weekend grossed an even worse $29.6 million, which is the lowest three-day start in Pixar’s history. The silver lining is that Elemental has a strong PostTrak exit rate and an A CinemaScore, which may account for why it outperformed Across the Spider-Verse on Thursday with $3.6 million as opposed to $3.5 million.
The film had its world premiere on May 27, 2023, during an out-of-competition screening at the 76th Cannes Film Festival. Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures released Elemental in theaters in the US on June 16, 2023, following the film festival.
Fans Were Unaware Of Elemental Release!
With a pun-filled tale of two star-crossed lovers who are brought together by fate despite the greater forces trying to keep them away, Elemental, the latest Pixar film from director Peter Sohn, tries to reflect on all of the realities about our world.
When this movie first opened in theaters, it appears that viewers were unaware.
What is Elemental About?
Pixar’s 27th movie centers on “tough, quick-witted and fiery” young woman Ember from Firetown, “whose friendship with a fun, sappy, go-with-the-flow guy named Wade challenges her beliefs about the world they live in.”
Producer Denise Ream previously shared, “It’s a story about relationships — between Fire and Water, between parents and their kids, and between all of us and our neighbors who might not look like us. It’s part comedy, part family journey, and part culture clash.”
According to Pixar, the film is also inspired by “big cities around the globe,” and the film “embraces theorized contributions from each elemental community — from giant pine-tree-like buildings and waterfall skyscrapers to a tornado-shaped arena called Cyclone Stadium.”
Elemental was released on June 16th, 2023, by Disney and Pixar and is in theaters now.
