Despite the Starfield Hype, PlayStation Sales Jumped a HUGE 42% in August

With Starfield headlining the gaming news over the past few weeks, PlayStation console sales over the past month have given Sony something to cheer about. The holiday season will be here soon, and console sales will see an increase over the remainder of the year. Xbox Head Phil Spencer recently confirmed an increased number of Xbox Series console sales since the beginning of September, all thanks to the official release of Starfield.

August saw an increase in the number of PS5 sales, with GfK reporting a 42% jump in sales month-on-month. The latest in the lineup of consoles by Sony, PlayStation 5 sales were boosted by some aggressive price discounting and bundles that were sold over the summer. This year alone, PlayStation 5 has seen an increase of up to 60% in sales, to date. Xbox sales were also up for August, just before the launch of the much-anticipated game, Starfield which has since officially launched globally.

Xbox sales still trailed PlayStation 5 and even Switch sales, as the Series S and X consoles saw an increase of just over 7% last month, over July. The year-to-date sales have also been quite poor as they were down by around 23% so far this year. Xbox consoles have been steadily going up since the release of Starfield, and with Forza Motorsport also releasing soon, the consoles should see an increase gradually until the end of the year.

PlayStation 5 sales boost also increased the sales of the console’s accessories having a good month of sales. GfK data shows that around 565,309 add-ons were sold last month. This is up 3.5% from July and an increase of 1% over last year. The best-selling accessories were all for the PlayStation 5, which includes the DualSense Controllers, and the charging stations for those controllers. The Grey Camo DualSense controller was part of the best-selling controllers last month, including the White, Midnight Black, Cosmic Red, and Starlight Blue versions.

The Nintendo Switch isn’t having a great month or even a great year, with month-on-month sales in August down 5% from July and year-to-date sales down by 10% so far. Xbox sales have also been substantially down this year but while the new and upcoming exclusive titles might boost Xbox console sales, Switch sales are not predicted to have a significant gain until the holiday season.

FIFA 23 has been the best-selling game last month, with the majority of sales being driven by the Switch version. The Armored Core franchise also saw an increase in sales of the newly released title, Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon. The newest title in the franchise sped up to second place in sales bettering the previous games in the franchise.

Rockstar Studios had a spectacular month after the release of Red Dead Redemption on PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch last month. The other two titles from the studio in the top ten list included Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, both of which have been selling more than Hogwarts Legacy and F1 23. Minecraft finished just above Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2022 edition) rounding up the top 10 best-selling titles.
