Last month, DC’s The Flash ran back in time to save his mother and changed the events in the timeline that needed fixing. But, it appears that he fixed things a little too much toward the end, or was it at James Gunn’s command?
Even though Zack Snyder acquired a cult fanbase with his own attempts at building a gritty DC extended universe, the rest of the world didn’t share his vision.
James Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran, with The Flash, have implemented a soft reboot of the franchise but, with certain caveats. Ousting Henry Cavill was just the beginning. Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot could hang around a little bit more but, Ezra Miller’s massive time stunt made sure that we never see the original Trinity, again!
Not just them, James Gunn has kicked out another family favorite superhero from the slate. The guy in red spandex threw lightning with his hands and yelled Shazam! — Zachary Levi has also been let go.

Zachary Levi’s Journey Ends With Shazam! Fury of The Gods
Warner Brothers Studios created an example out of their DC franchise by mismanaging the entire show to the point of no return. Zachary Levi’s entry as Shazam! brought a breath of much-needed fresh air but he couldn’t manage to save their tumbling house of cards.
James Gunn, in his slate – Gods and Monsters, showed no signs of involving Zachary Levi in his rebooted roster. According to Chuck actor, it all depended on the success of the sequel.
“I’m gonna sit down with James and Peter soon enough, and we’ll talk about it. The success of the second movie will determine a lot,” said Levi to Den of Geek.
We got to see a little cameo from the actor at the end of John Cena‘s Peacemaker as Jennifer Holland‘s Emilia Harcourt went to recruit Shazam! which sparked rumors that Levi has joined team Gunn, but nothing ever came of it.
Zachary Levi’s Never-Ending Faith In His Comedic Acting Style
Prior to his days as Shazam!, Zachary Levi used to be involved with Disney and Marvel Studios as he worked in the Thor franchise and as Flynn Rider in Tangled. In a recent conversation with Aryeh Hoppenstein of The FilmUp Podcast, Levi talked about his inspiration to act.
“I think [roughly] what happened was, around four years old, and I think around that age, you are cognizant that you can intentionally make someone laugh. So, I think right around then, was when this initial calling [slash] addiction formed in my little heart and brain, and soul. But, one way or another, around then it really clicked, ‘Oh okay, I can make people feel good all the time.’”
2025 is the year when James Gunn kicks off with his own fresh DCU, with Superman: Legacy as the first in the franchise.
It is unknown whether or not Zachary Levi and James Gunn shook hands at Marvel Studios, but reports say that Shazam! Fury of The Gods failing to perform has definitely pushed Levi out for good.
