Despite Assassin’s Creed Mirage Over the Horizon, Ubisoft Fans are More Excited About an Open World Game Set in Ancient Aztec Era

Assassin’s Creed is a long-running series, having started all the way back in 2007 with its first game, and the latest game in the series is Assassin’s Creed Mirage. It is meant to commemorate the fifteenth anniversary of the successful franchise created by developers Ubisoft and is a homage to the first game in particular. Starting off mainly as a series focused on stealth, the games have recently become more of an open-world role-playing game (RPG) series.

Over several games, players have visited several distinct locations such as Ancient Greece, Renaissance Italy, France during the French Revolution, Victorian London, and many, many more. But one culture and civilization Assassin’s Creed hasn’t taken us to yet is the Aztecs. Luckily, though, players will get to experience a game set in that era, albeit not an Assassin’s Creed one. Instead, players will get to play Ecumene Aztec.

What do we know about Ecumene Aztec?

Ecumene Aztec is a survival-action RPG game developed by Giantscraft and is scheduled to be released on PC in 2025. There is no currently no word on a console release, but that may well change in the future or if the game performs well. Set in a Mesoamerican city, the game sees players take control of an Aztec warrior who fights using a mixture of combat and stealth. They will also have to decide whether to play as the Aztecs repelling the invaders or one who joins them in their efforts.

Said to feature a strong story, leveling up through blood sacrifices, stealth, and combat, Ecumene Aztec is still in its early stages of development. We also know that there will be three classes or types of skill trees, which are the Jaguar, Snake, and Eagle which should focus on melee, stealth, and ranged respectively.

With Ubisoft focusing on making more Assassin’s Creed games, Ecumene Aztec will have its work cut out for it.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage goes back to the series’ roots

As noted above, Assassin’s Creed games in recent years have become more open–world and RPG-like in nature, beginning with 2017’s Assassin’s Creed Origins and continuing thereafter. But Assassin’s Creed Mirage is a return to the roots, prioritizing stealth, parkour, and assassinations. To do this, the game is set only in one city like the early games, which is Baghdad in the 9th century, and it will have many places for players to hide and parkour.

Removing the focus from the open-world and RPG elements takes the game back to a more linear experience with more attention given to the story. Returning from games like Assassin’s Creed Unity and Syndicate are the black-box missions, which allow the player to approach and assassinate the target in several different ways, with them having to choose whichever one they want.
