After James Gunn announced the reboot for the DC Universe, fans were quite upset about saying goodbye to some of their favorite actors including Ben Affleck’s Batman and the one that hurt the most – Henry Cavill’s Superman. While we will certainly miss the familiar faces, it’s time to move on.
However, there are a handful of old actors who will be a part of James Gunn’s new DCU which will begin with Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. Let’s take a look at the actors who were able to survive James Gunn’s reboot and will soon be returning to the superhero universe, one way or the other.

Actors Returning After James Gunn’s Reboot
Viola Davis (Amanda Waller)
While announcing the projects that will be a part of ‘Gods and Monsters,’ James Gunn revealed that Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller will be seen leading her very own live-action Max series, Waller. She was previously seen in a few films in the superhero universe, including both Suicide Squad films and Black Adam. She was also a part of the series, Peacemaker.
Davis posted a photo of the announcement on her Instagram account where she wrote, “Very exciting news. Can’t wait to tackle ‘The Wall.’”
Since Waller is a part of Chapter One, there is a long time to go before the series releases.
Xolo Maridueña (Blue Beetle)
Xolo Maridueña’s Blue Beetle is the newest member of the DCU with his film having just been released. Both the film and Maridueña’s performance have received praise from fans and critics and therefore, we are quite excited that this may not be the last we will be seeing of him in the DCU.
During his appearance on the Inside of You podcast, Gunn made a surprising revelation stating that Maridueña’s Blue Beetle is in fact the first DCU character. He said,
“I mean the first DCU character, for sure, is Blue Beetle, and the first full DCU movie is Superman [Legacy].
Of course, this does not mean that a sequel to Blue Beetle is confirmed even in the furthest future. As far as Maridueña is concerned, though, he is “so ready” to do another film, as he told Variety.
John Cena (Peacemaker)
Well, we are glad our favorite television supe is not going to be left behind! After the successful run of Peacemaker season one, John Cena is all set to reprise his role in the next season. While Peacemaker season 2 was announced before Gunn and Peter Safran took charge of the studio, the former himself confirmed Cena being a part of the new DCU.
While replying to a fan on X (formerly known as Twitter) who was asking about the release of Peacemaker season 2, Gunn stated that it will release sometime after Superman: Legacy. Well, that is one long wait.
Sean Gunn (Weasel)
Gunn’s brother, Sean Gunn, has also managed to save himself from the snap as he will reprise his role as Weasel in the upcoming Max series, Creature Commandos. Apart from playing Weasel in the series, Gunn will also give his voice to G.I. Robot, a military android. He was previously seen in The Suicide Squad (2021).
As for the release of Creature Commandos, James Gunn stated a few months back that the series will be out even before Superman: Legacy.
Steve Agee (John Economos)
It looks like the Peacemaker actors got the long end of the stick as Steve Agee, who played the role of John Economos in the series, is all set to return to not one, but two future DCU projects. This includes Creature Commandos and of course, Waller. Agee made his debut in The Suicide Squad which means that he officially has four DC projects in his portfolio.
As of now, there is no update about Agee being in the second season of Peacemaker, but we won’t be surprised if that happens.
Gunn has a lot planned for the reboot, which might get a little overwhelming for the viewers. We are glad we have a few familiar faces to keep us company on the ride!
