The DCEU is ending as James Gunn will begin a new DC Universe with The Flash. Multiple characters will be recast and their stories will be rewritten. As a result, most plot threads that were left dangling in the past DC movies will not be tied up. Up till now, the DCEU has suffered a lot because of studio politics, which caused the comings and goings of multiple DC heads. As a result, the larger narrative has been altered way too many times even before Gunn came in. That ultimately led to many setups from the post-credits scenes being completely wasted. The following is a list of all DC post credits scenes that went nowhere:
DC Post Credits Scenes That Were Wasted
Constantine (2005)
Keanu Reeves’ Constantine came way before the DCEU or even Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy began. It wasn’t a massive success at the box office, but it certainly acquired a niche and a devoted fanbase. Hence, a sequel was put in development in recent times, with both Keanu Reeves and Peter Stormare returning.
But now with a rebooted DC universe, we won’t be getting Constantine 2. And the original’s DC post credits scenes involving the resurrection of Shia Labeouf’s Chas will never be continued. We witnessed the tragic death of Chas, but he rose from his grave as an angel and took flight. But this scene also wouldn’t have gone anywhere because Shia Labeouf was canceled by Hollywood.
Green Lantern (2011)
Even though Ryan Reynolds’ Green Lantern wasn’t officially a part of the DCEU, DC’s shared universe was initially supposed to begin with his movie. However, WB had to restart things with Man of Steel as Green Lantern bombed hard at the box office.
Even though the movie is deemed to be bad, its DC post credits scenes featuring Mark Strong’s Sinestro actually excited many fans. It was a perfect casting choice that could have done wonders with the right script. But just like many other DCEU castings, a future for Strong’s Sinestro was never meant to be.
People will be hoping for another strong casting for Sinestro in the upcoming Lanterns series.
Suicide Squad (2016)
While we still haven’t got the Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad, the original theatrical cut ended with a tease of Suicide Squad vs. The Justice League. Amanda Waller met with Bruce Wayne to deliver the details of metahumans like Barry Allen and Arthur Curry. But the scene ended with Bruce Wayne warning Waller to shut down her Task Force X or else he and his friends will do that forcefully.
But with Snyder’s Justice League not having a future and the world knowing about Waller’s Task Force X already, a Suicide Squad doesn’t exist anymore. And soon, we will see a different iteration of Justice League involving a new Batman and Superman. Hence, that Suicide Squad DC post credits scenes also got wasted.
Justice League
The “Josstice League” ended with a union between Lex Luthor and Deathstroke where the former invited the latter to form a team. Lex’s exact words were, “Shouldn’t we have a League of our own?” It was a setup for the Injustice League that would have appeared in Justice League 2 involving other villains like Doctor Poison and Captain Cold. But the sequel never happened, so the DC post credits scenes led nowhere.
Wonder Woman 1984
Wonder Woman 1984 initially teased a mystery character named Asteria who sacrificed herself to save the other Amazons from the tide of men. However, she was strong enough to survive against them, and the film’s DC post credits scenes revealed that she was alive even in the present day.
It was the former Wonder Woman actress Lynda Carter who showed up in the DCEU to play Asteria. She saved a little girl and was supposed to show up in Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 3. But the team-up between the old Wonder Woman and the latest Wonder Woman will not happen anymore as Jenkins’ treatment of the film was rejected by Warner Bros.
Furthermore, James Gunn could possibly recast Gal Gadot’s Diana Prince after The Flash.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League
The entire epilogue of Zack Snyder’s Justice League acted as massive DC post credits scenes. It sent all heroes in different directions, out of which only Aquaman and Flash have got future films. Rest, Cyborg’s future movie has been abandoned, Man of Steel 2 isn’t happening, and neither is Wonder Woman 3. The Lex and Slade Wilson sequence also teased Batman’s solo film. But that didn’t happen either as WB went forward with Matt Reeves’ The Batman instead.
Then came the massive Knightmare sequence where Lois, Arthur, and Diana died, Superman submitted to the Anti-Life Equation and Batman formed a team featuring Mera, Barry, Victor Stone, Slade Wilson, and the Joker in a post-apocalyptic world controlled by Darkseid. They were all about to take on an evil Superman, but that’s when Bruce’s vision ended.
Then he met with the Martian Manhunter, who showed up to be a part of the Justice League in part 2. But Warner Bros. always called Zack Snyder’s Justice League the end of his trilogy. So, no more SnyderVerse, and the entire epilogue and DC post credits scenes go to waste.
Black Adam
After getting booed at Comic-Con, Dwayne Johnson fought to bring Henry Cavill back as the Man of Steel in Black Adam’s DC post credits scenes. It included a warning from Amanda Waller, who asked Adam to stay within Kahndaq. Then, she sent Cavill’s Superman to have a word with the Man in Black. This was supposed to set up a Black Adam vs. Superman sequel, and ultimately a Justice League vs. Black Adam & Suicide Squad battle event.
But since Dwayne Johnson lost the battle to take over the future of the DC Universe against James Gunn, Black Adam himself doesn’t have a future in Gunn’s rebooted reality. And neither does Cavill’s Superman, as Gunn is casting a new actor for the part.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods
While Shazam never got the proper setups to fight Black Adam, he did get a couple of them to battle the Monster Society of Evil. In Shazam!, Mister Mind showed up at Doctor Sivana’s prison to ask him about a future team-up. Then he did the same thing 2 years later in Shazam! Fury of the Gods. However, he was much closer to assembling his team this time.
But that is of no good anymore as DC will write another villain played by Mark Strong out of existence. Shazam! Fury of the Gods has proven to be a major bomb at the box office. So, the Shazam family will not have a future in Gunn’s DCU. Hence, both these Shazam movies turn out to lead absolutely nowhere.
