Famed director Christopher Nolan, in 2010, took audiences on a surreal voyage with his masterwork Inception. Nolan, the visionary behind critically acclaimed movies like The Dark Knight trilogy and Interstellar, once again pushed the boundaries of storytelling with this monumental work.
This sci-fi thriller has earned a reputation for its skillful storytelling, stunning visuals, and in-depth exploration of the human psyche. The notion of dreams, which originally came from Nolan’s fascination with the mysterious nature of the dream world, is at the center of the film.
Dreams as the Origin Idea Behind the Masterpiece
Inception is the result of Christopher Nolan’s unrelenting fascination with the dream world. The idea for the movie came from Nolan’s interest in the puzzling dynamics of dreams, where our minds create complicated universes that frequently transcend the boundaries of reality. Nolan was motivated by this curiosity to craft a story that traveled the complex pathways of the dream world while diving into ideas about perception, memory, and the profound impact of the mind on one’s reality.
In an interview, the famed filmmaker revealed:
“A lot of the inspiration for Inception was from a period of my life when I was in university and did not have much money and breakfast was free. I would go to bed at four in the morning or sometimes set my alarm, wake up to get into breakfast, go back to sleep.”
“So, then you’re in this sleep state where it became possible to be very aware of the fact that you are dreaming. And, I would experiment with trying to control the dream. And trying to make something. And it was frustrating, and the occasional moment where you get something to work. And you’re able to actually channel your dreaming, lucid dreaming. That’s the superpower.”
The idea of how dreams shape how we perceive reality and how they might be controlled fascinated Nolan’s inquisitive mind. This inquisitiveness served as the inspiration for his significant movie.
Inception: A Heist of Dreams
In his dream-heist movie, Christopher Nolan tells the tale of thieves who break into subconscious realms that hide crystal-clear reflections of the dreamer’s fears, desires, and concerns.
Nolan had been fascinated with the nature of dreams for a long time before writing Inception.
“I wanted to do this for a very long time, it’s something I’ve thought about off and on since I was about 16,” he told The Los Angeles Times.
“I wrote the first draft of this script seven or eight years ago, but it goes back much further, this idea of approaching dream and the dream life as another state of reality.”
Christopher Nolan’s Inception is an intellectual journey that grew out of his fascination with dreams and the workings of the human mind. Inception is a feast for the eyes.
