Cillian Murphy and Christopher Nolan are one of the most blockbuster and successful duo in Hollywood. The duo together have forged a longstanding and fruitful collaboration in the world of filmmaking. The two acclaimed stars revealed in an interview that trust is the secret of their cinematic wonders over the years. Murphy emphasized that trusting the director is the most important aspect for him while making a film.
Cillian Murphy On Trusting His Director
Cillian Murphy shared that one of the most important aspects of making a film should be the relationship of trust between the directors and the actors. The Peaky Blinders star stated that this level of trust has grown pretty strong between him and Nolan with the help of their multiple collaborations.
“I think the best thing that happens from re-collaboration is that you get this level of trust. I think that’s allowed us to continue to make interesting work. To me, that’s the most important thing. If you trust the director, you can really go out on a limb, and be vulnerable, and expose yourself emotionally.”
Adding on, Murphy shared how Nolan inspected everything by himself before every shoot in Dunkirk, to ensure his actors feel comfortable and safe.
“People should be aware, Chris, that before you put me on top of that overturned hull, you went up there yourself to make sure. You said, ‘I’m not putting him up there unless I go up there myself.’ You do that a lot and so people should be aware of that. Again, that’s something that makes the actor feel incredibly safe, not just emotionally, but physically.”
Christopher Nolan On The Creative Freedom Of Trust
Christopher Nolan recognized and talked about the creative freedom that trust brings to the filmmaking process. The Inception director further added that the freedom of trust expands the horizon to try new things leading to more interesting and genuine performances, without any fear of being right or wrong. Nolan’s relationship of trust with Murphy convinced the Breakfast on Pluto star to sign up for his challenging role in the 2017 film, Dunkirk.
“Trust is creatively freeing, because you feel like you can try things, and there are no wrong answers, nobody’s going to chastise you, or laugh at you. It’s like, okay, let’s just try a few different things, and then trust on the fundamental level of, okay, we’re going to take you on a boat, and we’re going to sit you on top of an overturned hull, and on a cue, you’re going to jump off into the sea.”
It seems like this acclaimed duo will continue to deliver impactful performances to the audience with their meaningful collaborations. The duo will soon come up with their latest and promising collaboration on the film, Oppenheimer.
Oppenheimer will be released on July 21, 2023.
