The Dark Knight trilogy brought fame and stardom for star director Christopher Nolan; however, the director feels another film became the turning point of his career.
Christopher Nolan felt The Dark Knight was not his biggest leap
Christopher Nolan started his career with Following, which was a low-budget film. From there he has come far along, and now makes movies that have a budget of hundreds of millions. Some of his big-budget movies include The Dark Knight, Inception, and most recently, Cillian Murphy’s Oppenheimer. However, the director credited another film for bringing him into the league of famous directors.
Nolan recalled in a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter,
“People will often ask me about taking on Batman or whatever, but the truth is that the biggest leap I ever made in my career was from Following to Memento. It was from working with friends, spending my own money, and then risking our time and effort, to spending millions of dollars of somebody else’s money and having a proper crew there with trucks, and trailers and all sorts of things going on.”
The film earned critical acclaim and became a commercial success. It assisted in establishing Christopher Nolan’s career in Hollywood.
Christopher Nolan was impressed by Guy Pearce’s performance in Memento
The film Memento was a neo-noir mystery psychological thriller film, written and directed by Christopher Nolan. The star cast included Guy Pearce, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Joe Pantoliano. The film grossed $40 million over its $9 million budget, and it also gained a cult following.
Christopher Nolan was highly impressed by the lead actor Guy Pearce’s performance in Memento. The director believed the actor deserved greater recognition for his remarkable acting. Though his film was a box office success, Nolan felt that the Hollywood industry had overlooked Pearce’s talents and wanted the actor to receive the due recognition. Nolan shared,
“Guy’s performance in Memento is often not appreciated – he certainly never got the recognition for his performance that I did for my screenplay – which is unfortunate because he brought so much to it.”
In Memento, Guy Pearce played the character of a man struggling with memory loss, who wanted revenge for his wife’s murder. The audiences and critics were impressed by Nolan’s direction and storytelling.
Memento is available for streaming on Amazon Prime.
