From being on the list of most anticipated movies of 2023 to being the most successful movie of the summer, fans have crowned Barbie with $1.2 billion box office domination. The Margot Robbie starrer movie is still dominating the box office breaking records.
Barbie has been in the no.1 spot for consecutive four weeks and there is no slowing down anytime soon. After Barbie director Greta Gerwig claimed the spot of highest-grossing female director of all time, the movie surpassed Warner Brothers’ The Dark Knight.

Barbie Broke The Dark Knight Record
Christopher Nolan’s one of the most precious movies The Dark Knight has held its position as king dominating the box office right after its release in 2008. Christian Bale starrer the Batman movie broke all the records at Warner Brothers becoming the highest-grossing domestic release in the history of the studio earning a whopping $536 million at the North American box office. Interestingly, Barbie, which was released in mid-July, around the same season as The Dark Knight, walked a few steps ahead just breaking the Noaln movie record earning $537.5 million, and there is room for more, as long as the fans crave it.
Before Margot Robbie’s Barbie, no other movies came close to challenging the dominance of The Dark Knight at Warner Bros. The charm of the trio— Nolan, Bale, and Heath Ledger has remained on the top at the studio’s releases, well, until now. If the Barbie craze sustain a little longer, experts say, the movie could outgrow the Super Mario Bros. Movie. The video game animated movie earned over $574 million in North America and $1.35 billion from the global audience. And at this rate of acceleration, Barbie is most likely to surpass Super Mario Bros. Movie both in North America and the world.
Greta Gerwig Becomes Highest Grossing Domestic Female Director of All Time
With Barbie, the director Greta Gerwig also has something to enjoy in her individual feat. The hot pink flame of the movie is still shedding light on the cash flow while Gerwig has been crowned as the highest-grossing female director of all time, of course, domestically. Barbie has already surpassed Jennifer Lee, Chris Buck-directed Disney animated Frozen II which earned $477.4 million in North America after its release in 2019.
Gerwig has received another feat of accomplishment as she becomes the highest-grossing female director of a live-action movie at the global box office after Barbie charm surpassed the magic of MCU’s Captain Marvel which on its own right holds several records. The Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck-directed 2019 movie has grossed over $1.13 billion at the global box office, and now Barbie’s collection is self-explanatory.
Gerwig’s Pinkmania is a little behind Frozen II’s global record as the Disney movie has earned a record-breaking $1.43 billion from the global market. If Barbie continues to accelerate, Gerwig becoming the highest-grossing female director of all time might be a possibility.
Barbie is currently showing in the theaters.
