Marvel is famous for adding post-credits scenes that lead to another project in the future. Gradually, multiple films have adapted the method since it allows fans to be hyped up about upcoming projects and lets makers create a potential franchise out of their IP. But what could the sequel be based on? Pratt mentions that Luigi’s Mansion is one possible game the sequel could draw from. He said:

“There’s been talk of Luigi’s Mansion. That was a Gamecube game. I think that would be great (as a sequel).”

That’s not all. The Marvel actor also expressed his interest in doing a Mario Golf-inspired film. Fans of the Mario franchise will be glad to see Pratt’s enthusiasm for the film and his role since not many loved his casting when it was initially announced. However, co-director Aaron Horvath always believed that Pratt is the right man for the role.

Aaron Horvath, The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s co-director, in an interview with Total Film stated that Chris Pratt is the perfect actor to play Mario because he put his heart into the project and is well-versed in playing blue-collared heroes. As per Horvath:

“For us, it made total sense. [Chris is] really good at playing a blue-collar hero with a ton of heart. For the way that Mario is characterized in our film, he’s perfect for it.”

Chris Pratt has also defended the movie from trolls and the various performances in it during an interview with Extra TV. He urged fans to give the film a shot and assured them that the project isn’t a cash grab that will taint their childhood memories. As per the actor:

“Go watch the movie and then we can talk… I think that in all honesty though is that this is a passionate fanbase and it makes sense. I understand, I’m part of it. This is the soundtrack to your youth. You don’t want someone to come along and cynically kind of destroy it as a cash grab with a movie. I fully understand that, you do not want that to happen, and there are so many hearts and souls and minds dedicated to making sure that didn’t happen.”

Joining Chris Pratt is Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Jack Black as Bowser, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, among others. The film is highly anticipated by the fanbase and Deadline predicts that the film will gross $85 to $90 million in its opening weekend. It remains to be seen whether that happens or not.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie releases on 7 April 2023.
