Brendan Fraser is one of the most beloved actors of the 2000s. Known for his amazing acting and charming screen presence, Fraser has been a fan favorite for decades. Hence, it was not surprising when it was revealed that the George of the Jungle star was a contender to replace Chris Evan’s Fantastic Four co-star in their $333 million movie.
Had Brendan Fraser bagged the opportunity, he would have played the role of Mr. Fantastic in the first Fantastic Four movies. Instead, the role went to Ioan Gruffudd. Not only did the illustrious star lose the opportunity to become a Marvel superhero, but he was also reportedly in line to play the Man of Steel in Superman Returns. Unfortunately for the fans, it never worked out.
Brandan Fraser Was Almost Mr. Fantastic
The 2005 Fantastic Four might have gotten average ratings and too harsh a criticism from film critics, but the film still fared well with comic book lovers and superhero fans. The audience loved the casting as well and Ioan Gruffudd was amazing as Mr Fantastic. However, before Gruffudd would be cast, The Mummy actor, Brendan Fraser was at the top to play the role of Reed Richards.
Known for being a prolific actor, Fraser has starred in multiple hit and diversified movies over the years. The actor, who recently made his comeback, is known for his dramatic, comedic, and action roles and is a versatile performer. Although the Titanic star was perfect in his role, fans cannot help but think how the role would have developed had Fraser won the opportunity.
His screen presence as a charismatic actor would perhaps have made Richards more enjoyable. While Gruffadd was more reserved as Reed Richards, Fraser’s portrayal would have perhaps made it more expressive, and open to approach. While it was not meant to be, maybe in another universe Fraser did play Mr Fantastic and we can’t help but wonder how it would have gone.
Brendan Fraser Was Also Almost Superman
Imagining Brendan Fraser as Superman is too hard of a thought. But it almost came true when he was in the running to be cast as the iconic DC hero in DC’s Superman Returns. While he could not be a Marvel hero in the Chris Evans starter film, he also could not become one of the leading superheroes in the world. However, the actor wasn’t a bit fazed and was glad to never play the role.
“Of course, it’s a life-changing, amazing opportunity, but I had to reconcile with, ‘OK, say you do get the job to be the Man of Steel. It’s going to be chipped on your gravestone. Are you OK with that? You will forevermore be known as the Man of Steel.’”
The Oscar winner revealed as he didn’t want to be limited to just a single role, a fate that Superhero actors are often subjected to.
