For one such movie, Theron had to play a pregnant woman, for which she had to gain nearly 50 pounds plus 45 pounds of the fake belly, leading the actress to a potentially career-ending injury, thanks to the additional weight.

Charlize Theron is no doubt one of the best actresses in the world who would go to great lengths to make her character look believable. And for the same reason, the actress agreed to gain 50 pounds plus wear an additional 45 pounds of fake belly to play a pregnant struggling suburb for the $15M movie Tully, a dark comedy directed by Jason Reitman.

However, while putting on weight might’ve been the slightly easier part, what’s worse is that the Oscar-winning actress ended up injured because of the extra weight. As revealed by Charlize Theron herself, the then-43-year-old ended up with a herniated disc in her lower back, which also put her career at potential risk.

What’s more surprising is that she gained weight right after she was in her best possible shape training for her previous movie Atomic Blonde with Keanu Reeves. This just adds up to the fact that Charlize Theron isn’t one to get afraid of a complete transformation for the sake of a role, even if it means trading the perfect body for an overweight one.

Before the filming of Tully (2018), Charlize Theron was in the best shape of her life, thanks to training for her previous movie Atomic Blonde with Keanu Reeves who shared the same airport hanger to gear up for his movie John Wick: Chapter 2. Even though The Devil’s Advocate co-stars didn’t always train together, however, when they did, Theron dreamed of pinning Reeves down in an actual fight. She said,

“We had a lot of like, you know, smack talk. We did a lot of that. I would have stupid moments where I would think I could actually tackle him and pin him down. He would just try to, in a very sweet way, entertain my complete stupidity and allow me to kind of pin him down.”

While this hand-to-hand battle only happened while training, fans will have to wait for the time being and imagine for themselves as to who would win between Charlize Theron and Keanu Reeves had there been an actual fight.
