The WGA strike has turned out to be an incredibly heavy cross to bear for Marvel Studios.
MCU’s Blade reboot starring Mahershala Ali became the first tentpole film to suffer from the blow of the ongoing labor dispute. With the surge of protests and picketers battling against the AMPTP, the forthcoming vampire thriller was left with no other choice but to stop pre-production after already struggling with delays. Shortly after that, Deadpool 3 followed suit in terms of Ryan Reynolds’ creative freedom concerning the project. And now, yet another soldier has fallen with production for Daredevil: Born Again skidding to an inexorable halt owing to the strike.
Daredevil: Born Again Gets Impacted by the WGA Strike
Daredevil: Born Again, the MCU superhero series which is set to bring back Charlie Cox‘s Matt Murdock under Disney’s purview, has now been affected by the wrath of the writer’s protest.
Created by Matt Corman and Chris Ord, the television show’s production got suspended after teamsters refused to cross the picket lines. As a result of the same, filming was shut down at Silver Cup East in New York City after picketing writers remained unperturbed in their efforts.
Per the WGA East Twitter page, “members on strike set up a sunrise picket at Silvercup East, where they’re supposed to be filming Daredevil, but members of the Teamster Local 817 and IATSE Locals 829 and 52 are refusing to cross the picket line.” Soon after that, Daredevil: Born Again concluded production for the day with no scenes shot after 1 PM ET. Per Deadline, however, sources reported that the show would resume filming again today.
The Writers Strike Continues With Full Vigor
Cox’s Daredevil: Born Again isn’t the only big-studio project that has been impacted by the relentless unrest between the WGA and AMPTP. A number of shows including HBO’s Game of Thrones spinoff and Stranger Things, besides popular late-night talk shows like SNL, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and NBC’s Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, to name a few, have borne the brunt of the labor tensions simmering in Hollywood.
More than thousands of writers have gone to war against industry titans like Paramount, Apple, and Amazon that are represented by AMPTP in light of numerous issues, especially regarding sub-par wages and the threat of a hostile AI takeover. The protests were kickstarted by the Writers Guild of America on May 2 after the AMPTP failed to renew their existing contract which proved to be obsolete in the face of the explosion of streaming media and services.
The last time the WGA went on strike was back in 2007, and the picketing went on for over 100 days, leading to multiple shows and films struggling with delays and shutdowns. So, the future pertaining to the ’23 strike remains obscure at large.
The first season of Daredevil: Born Again is set to air on Disney+ in 2024.
