Chad Stahelski, the director of John Wick: Chapter 4, has expressed his openness to the possibility of creating a fifth movie in the franchise. According to Stahelski, the audience’s interest in seeing more of the John Wick universe is genuine. Stahelski added that he and Keanu Reeves would take some time to consider the possibility of another film and that they were open to the idea if inspiration strikes.
John Wick 4’s Box Office Success
The latest installment in the John Wick franchise, Chapter 4, has been met with widespread critical acclaim and box office success. The film has garnered praise for its impressive action sequences, well-written screenplay, expert direction, and strong acting performances. As of now, it has already earned over $245 million globally in theaters, a testament to its popularity among moviegoers.
Director Chad Stahelski has previously expressed his desire to continue to be a part of the franchise’s larger universe, even though John Wick’s story has seemingly come to a close. Stahelski affirmed that neither he nor Keanu Reeves would ever say they are done with the franchise, adding that they are both proud of their work and happy that people want to see more.
He stated during The Hollywood Reporter’s Behind the Screen podcast that
“It’s very flattering for them to come back and, you know, say ‘We want more’ and it’s not just a cash grab. It’s legitimately the audience wants more.”
He also noted that they would be there to help out if Lionsgate, the production company behind the franchise, decides to continue with the property. Ultimately, the future of the John Wick franchise remains in the hands of Lionsgate, but it is clear that Stahelski and Reeves are enthusiastic about the possibility of exploring more of this beloved universe.
Future Plans for the John Wick Franchise
The first John Wick spinoff, The Continental, is a prequel set in the 1970s, following a young Winston as he starts his career as a hotelier loyal to the High Table. The show will feature origin stories for various movie characters and will air as a three-episode feature-length series.
Ballerina, a female-led spinoff set in the same timeframe as John Wick, is rumored to star Ana de Armas and will be directed by Len Wiseman.
Halle Berry’s character, Sofia, may also get her own spinoff, but no official announcement has been made.
Derek Kolstad, the creator of both John Wick and Nobody, is open to the idea of a crossover and shared universes. While a full-blown movie crossover between the two franchises may not happen, Kolstad suggested that the lead characters could exist in various detached universes. This could lead to a potential crossover where Hutch from Nobody and Wick meet, but the details are unclear.
With only a few John Wick movies planned, the franchise’s spinoffs are essential for its longevity. The Continental and Ballerina are highly anticipated by fans, and a Sofia spinoff would be a welcome opportunity for Halle Berry, who had a canceled spinoff for her Die Another Day character, Jinx.
