Even the best in the business can’t avoid bad days in the office, and the same goes for the OG James Bond, Sean Connery. Originally starting it all back in 1962 with Dr. No, which has stood the test of time, setting the gold standard for all the later entries that succeeded him, Connery’s 007 will go down as the definitive version of the cultural icon.
But like everything else in the media landscape, the deceased Hollywood legend’s resume as the British Spy wasn’t flawless, as one of his movies was recently voted as the lowest in the franchise by fans.
Sean Connery’s Never Say Never Again Earns the Worst James Bond Movie Title by Fans
During his prime, fans couldn’t get enough of the Hollywood legend in the Glen Check Suit, as Sean Connery, for the most part, kept on delivering classic after classic that would define the whole Bond mythos. However, out of his seven movies, the non-canonical Never Say Never Again, the actor’s last outing as the titular character, was recently voted as the worst James Bond movie.
A recent survey conducted in the U.K. by William Hill Vegas, witnessed 3,500 local citizens expressing their favorite and worst James Bond entries. And in the survey, Daniel Craig‘s Skyfall scored the highest, accumulating 17.5%, while Sean Connery’s Never Say Never Again scored a mere 0.6%, making it the worst Bond entry.
Never Say Never Again Was an Underwhelming End to Sean Connery’s James Bond Journey
Whether the best James Bond film title should go to Skyfall or Goldfinger remains up for debate, but Never Say Never Again was surely one of the most disappointing 007 movies to date. Although objectively it isn’t the worst in the franchise, as 1967’s Casino Royale takes that title, considering the 1983 entry was Connery’s last stint as 007, the Hollywood icon deserved a better swansong.
Although it did decent among critics, with a 71% on the Tomatometer, it was a far cry from other classics involving Connery, and the film did nothing but taint the actor’s unmatched legacy.
Considering fans unanimously believe the greatest James Bond deserved a better send-off than the one he got, it’s understandable why it is ranked so low by fans. And with the search for the next 007 still going, with probable candidates being Henry Cavill and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, fans will hope the next entry will be more in line with Connery’s Goldfinger than Never Say Never Again.
Never Say Never Again is available to rent on Apple TV.
