Call of Duty remains one of the most popular series of all time, spanning nearly two decades, and that popularity is certainly true with Xbox users.
Recently classic Call of Duty titles have seen an up-turn in online player numbers, thanks to a recent update which has improved matchmaking. This means that players can now find a match within a matter of seconds. However, despite this there is still that ongoing issue of hackers and cheaters which continue to plague the online matches.
So given this recent update, it should be no surprise to see that sales of classic titles have increased. And it seems like Black Ops and Black Ops II are the titles receiving the most interest right now, with both currently on digital sale for Microsoft.
However these are only at a discounted price for just under two weeks, so if you’re looking to pick these up a cheaper price we would recommend getting in there quick!
As we currently write this, Black Ops II (2012) is sitting in the top 50 of digital sales in the Xbox marketplace for the UK and US. And it’s in good company as the 2009 version of Modern Warfare is along side it. To put this into context, both these titles are currently outselling Halo: The Master Chief Edition, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, Hogwarts Legacy, Skyrim and many others.
One gamer noted that when they loaded up, there were 76,000 players online for Modern Warfare 3 (2011). Now this could purely be down to anticipation for the upcoming Modern Warfare 3 remake which is due to launch in Autumn but those numbers for a decade old game are really quite impressive. But that’s topped by the numbers for Black Ops (2010), which had a reported 127,000 players online.
It remains to be seen whether these types of numbers will maintain following Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard but in the meantime, gamers can pick up the original Modern Warfare titles for between £9.99 – £12.49 ($9.99 – $14.99 USD) each and between £11.99 – £12.49 ($14.99 USD) each for the Black Ops titles. But as we mentioned earlier, these Call of Duty titles are only on sale for the next couple of weeks!

Why are we seeing a revival with classic Call of Duty titles?
So why is it that we’re seeing a renaissance with the older titles? Sure, the fact that they’re on sale is always a good starting point but what is it that is attracting gamers to the decade old instalments?
It may be that if you’re of a certain age (like me), you get nostalgic about old titles and love just revisiting them time and again and in this case, hope that you fare better in multiplayer than you did ten years ago! Not only that but there’s certainly something enjoyable about getting the old squad back together and getting re-united with the old maps that you no doubt spent countless hours running about working on the K/D ratio.
