It has been officially revealed that Activision’s 2024 Call of Duty game will take place during the Persian Gulf War, also known as the Gulf War. This is not to be confused with Activision’s 2023 Call of Duty game expected to release this Fall, under the title, Modern Warfare 3. Next year‘s game will likely be a continuation of the Call of Duty: Black Ops series. The previous installment was Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, taking place in the early 1980’s. The Gulf War took place from 1990 to 1991 and players will likely see a time jump between the two games.

Why Call of Duty 2024 Going to the Gulf War Will Make for an Exciting Game
Whether it’s something you learned about it in school or you’re a history buff, you probably know a lot happened in the one year Gulf War. Several countries including the United States, France, the United Kingdom, Egypt, and many more, came together as a Coalition of Armed Forces to take on Saddam Hussein’s Iraq. Hussein was not a stable leader and was intent on invading Kuwait for a resource that is most often fought over, oil. He claimed Kuwait belonged to Iraq, however, his arguments were unjustified, given that Kuwait was independent before the sovereignty of Iraq.
Hussein invaded Kuwait in August 8, 1990 which caused a major international conflict. The United Nations said it would become involved if Iraq did not withdraw from Kuwait by January 15, 1991. When the deadline was not met, two days later, Operation Desert Storm began. It was meant to target aircraft, various defenses, communication, oil, weapons, and more. On February 24th, Operation Desert Sabre instituted the coalition’s ground offensive and four days after the war was over.

The Iraqi forces saw 30,000 soldiers dead, where only 292 coalition soldiers were killed. Eventually, it became the goal of the United States to remove Hussein from power, and in 2003, the US invaded Iraq. The United States captured Hussein by the end of the year and he was executed in Iraq three years later.
Although the entirety of the Persian Gulf War only lasted a year, its history stretches through 2006 with the execution of Saddam Hussein. The Call of Duty 2024 game will certainly give players a chance to see the war from the perspective of a variety of countries and teach some of the history of what transpired.
