Abel Tesfaye aka The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp starred together in and released their HBO Max show The Idol for critics’ reviews. The show marks the acting debut of The Weeknd and fans were quite excited and anticipating the arrival of a great series…before the reviews.
As per the iconic website known for the unique takes of the critics, The Idol debuted with a record low of 20% on Rotten Tomatoes. This was directly contradictory to what happened at the Cannes Film Festival where the duo of The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp received a five-minute standing ovation for The Idol.

Getting involved in a complicated relationship with a self-help guru is always a bad idea. The idea gets even more maddening when the guru is none other than The Weeknd. As an aspiring pop star on the verge of a breakdown, Lily-Rose Depp’s character of Jocelyn seeks the help of Abel Tesfaye’s character Tedros. With hidden intentions and unsafe motivations, people were quite ecstatic to watch the HBO Max series.
When the news was announced, people waited eagerly to watch the show. The Idol was even featured at the Cannes Film Festival for which it received a five-minute standing ovation. With the release date nearing, the series was sent to critics for early reviews. Well, the critics’ reviews are here and they do not look promising at all.

On the other hand, Lily-Rose Depp had to go all out to portray the character of Jocelyn. A pop star on the verge of ending her career, Jocelyn ends up in a world fuelled by drugs, s*x, and media imagery and The Weeknd’s Tedros is the one pulling the string. The Idol, starring Abel Tesfaye and Lily-Rose Depp will premiere on HBO Max on 4th June 2023 in the U.S.
