Bryan Singer who was the man behind most of the X-Men films said goodbye to the director’s seat when he wanted to direct another Superhero movie. Singer was supposed to direct X-Men: The Last Stand, but the 57-year-old director gave up on the project to direct Superman Returns. X-Men: The Last Stand was released on 25 May and after Singer left the project, Brett Ratner was hired as the new director. Superman Returns was released on 30 June 2006,  and although the movie became financially successful, the worldwide box office collection was severely disappointing still.

According to rumors, Warner Bros. was dissatisfied with the overall performance of Superman Returns. The film grossed $391.1 million, making it the ninth highest-grossing picture in 2006. Despite this, the distributors canceled the sequel due to the film’s dismal performance at the global box office.

Even though it was a big disappointment for the producers and the distributors, Singer said he was very proud of his movie, Superman Returns. In an interview, The Usual Suspects director talked about his perception of why the movie failed at the global box office. The 57-year-old director said,

“ I think that Superman Returns was a bit nostalgic and romantic, and I don’t think that was what people were expecting, especially in the summer. What I had noticed is that there weren’t a lot of women lining up to see a comic book movie, but they were going to line up to see The Devil Wears Prada, which may have been something I wanted to address.”

He further added,

“But when you’re making a movie, you’re not thinking about that stuff, you’re thinking, ‘Wow, I want to make a romantic movie that harkens back to the Richard Donner movie that I loved so much.’ And that’s what I did.”
