The former couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have seen the glory of their popular and celebrated action-comedy Mr. & Mrs. Smith. The Doug Liman-directed 2005 movie went on to gross over $487 million against the production budget of $110 million.
The espionage thriller blended with cheer romance was set to be back on screen with a reimagined storyline and with a different set of casts. The debut of the show, however, was delayed and the reboot has a new premiere date.
Amazon Delays Mr. & Mrs. Smith Reboot
MCU star Donald Glover created/executive produced and starrer show Mr. & Mrs. Smith was announced to debut on Prime Videos in November this year. Based on the 2005 popular espionage drama of the same name, the Amazon show delayed its premiere date till 2024.
The premise of the show, however, would not strictly follow the original movie that starred Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie as the Smith couple, two spies assigned to kill each other. The television reboot starring Glover and Maya Erskine would explore more about the characters of John and Jane Smith. As per a statement by Amazon, the series will follow the following storyline:
“Meet the Smiths: Two strangers, John and Jane, who have given up their identities to be thrown together as partners — in espionage and in marriage. Matched by a mysterious agency, each episode follows them on a new mission and new milestone in their relationship. When the cracks begin to show through, they must fight to stay together. Because in this marriage, divorce is not an option,” (via GQ).
Earlier, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny star Phoebe Waller-Bridge joined the cast to play Jane Smith alongside Glover but she left the show and Erskine took over the role.
The Real Reason Why Phoebe Waller-Bridge Left the Show
The chemistry between Waller-Bridge and Glover was already established in the 2018 Star Wars spin-off Solo: A Star Wars Story and the duo was set to build another chemistry in the espionage loaded with ample romance and thrilling action. However, the Fleabag star has left the show due to creative differences. Speaking of Waller-Bridge’s departure and creative collaboration, Glover earlier revealed how close the project has been to him.
“I worked on that show for six months fully in heart and mind and really cared about it — still care about it – and I know it’s gonna be brilliant. But sometimes it’s about knowing when to leave the party. You don’t want to get in the way of a vision. Creative collaboration is like a marriage, and some marriages don’t work out,” Glover said (via GQ)
The showrunners, Glover and Francesca Sloane have fixed it all and starred PEN15 star Erskine. Alongside the leads, Michaela Coel, John Turturro, Paul Dano, Parker Posey, and Wagner Moura are also set to appear on the show.
