Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie starrer Mr. and Mrs. Smith was a movie that might go down in history for the amount of attention and paparazzi frenzy it received. Even though the movie would have been a significant success on its own, the media attention it attracted made it the blockbuster it is today.
However, the movie might not have turned out the way it is now, and Hollywood might have never gotten one of its most iconic couples ever since the makers originally wanted to cast Tom Cruise’s ex-Nicole Kidman instead of Angelina Jolie. Fortunately for the movie and unfortunately for Jennifer Aniston that never happened and the movie ended up being helmed by Brangelina.
Angelina Jolie Was Not The First Choice For Mr. and Mrs. Smith
Angelina Jolie could not have been more perfect for the role of Jane Smith. Starring opposite Brad Pitt, an already-established action star, she was perfect to portray the formidable secret spy. Her chemistry with her ex Pitt made the movie even more intriguing. Even viewers and critics felt the roles were created for them to star in.
However, Jolie was never the first choice for the role. Initially, Nicole Kidman was supposed to star opposite the Bullet Train star but had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts with her other projects. Later on, even Pitt dropped out after his co-star’s departure.
While Kidman would have been a good choice, it is highly unlikely that Kidman and Pitt could have created the same level of magic as Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt did. Even their chemistry wouldn’t have been the same since their alleged off-screen involvement potentially helped them bring their characters to life on-screen.
How Brad Pitt And Angelina Jolie Ended Up Starring In Mr. and Mrs. Smith
After Brad Pitt and Nicole Kidman, the initial leads of the movie left Mr. and Mrs. Smith, there was a frantic search for new leads. Multiple leads were considered but none seemed to work. Even Brad Pitt and Catherine Zeta-Jones were in at one point but since their pairing would have looked odd, Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp was considered to star opposite Jones.
Others such as Will Smith, Cate Blanchett, and Gwen Stefani were roped into the casting room. However, nothing seemed to work. It was then that Angelina Jolie was cast as the female lead which eventually helped Brad Pitt to re-enter the project. But the movie’s troubles were far from over. There were scheduling conflicts, the Brangelina affair, and much more that ultimately ended up making the movie as successful as it is now.
