The latest DC superhero movie Blue Beetle comes at a tumultuous time in the franchise, as James Gunn and Peter Safran look to restart the cinematic universe with the upcoming Superman: Legacy, kicking off what will come to be known as the DCU. Blue Beetle is one of the last remaining projects in the DC Extended Universe, although Gunn and Safran have hinted that some DCEU characters may return in the new universe. Thus, some fans are wondering if Blue Beetle teases the superhero’s return in a post-credits scene.
Blue Beetle follows a Latino college graduate named Jaime Reyes who is selected by an alien scarab to be its symbiotic host. After he bonds with the scarab, Reyes gains a suit of armor that bestows him with extraordinary powers, kicking off his journey to become the superhero Blue Beetle.
Blue Beetle stands out thanks to its incredible Latine representation both in front of and behind the camera. The film is directed by Puerto Rican filmmaker Ángel Manuel Soto and stars Xolo Maridueña as the titular superhero. Although Maridueña already rose to fame in the Karate Kid spin-off series Cobra Kai, Blue Beetle is his first leading role in a theatrical motion picture. The supporting cast is rounded out by a who’s who of Latine stars including Adriana Barraza, Becky G, Damián Alcázar, Raoul Max Trujillo, and George Lopez.
