The people of Wakanda have found a new enemy in the name of the French government. Marvel Studios’ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is one of the biggest movies of 2022, and the success of the franchise also stirred several controversies.
The introduction of new characters and storylines was crucial to the continuity of the Black Panther saga, especially after its original lead, Chadwick Boseman, passed away in 2020. While audiences have witnessed the rivalry against the Talokan in theaters, the franchise is now facing new opposition in real life.
French Armed Forces Condemns Black Panther: Wakanda Forever UN Scene
In a statement as per Politico, France’s Minister of the Armed Forces, Sébastien Lecornu wrote on Twitter his sentiments regarding the portrayal of the French army in the film. He said:
“I strongly condemn this false and deceptive representation of our armed forces. I am thinking of and honoring the 58 French soldiers who died defending Mali, at its request, in the face of Islamist terrorist groups.”
He also retweeted a scene from the movie featuring the Dora Milaje and a bunch of French soldiers, where journalist Jean Bexon noted that the men’s uniform resembles that of the soldiers that helped during Operation Barkhane.
There were a lot of scenes in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever that involved the United Nations. The first part of the movie saw Queen Ramonda revealing that several countries have attempted to steal their resources of Vibranium. This led to the discovery of more nations that utilize the same powerful element.
Wakanda Forever’s plot aimed at global politics, which created quite a buzz among the public. Somehow, this helped market and sell the movie, and it proved to be one of the most profitable Marvel films, especially after the first movie made history.
Chadwick Boseman’s Legacy Continues After Wakanda Forever
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is a striking testament to Chadwick Boseman’s legacy. The film earned more after it debuted on Disney+ where it became the most streamed film within five days of its small screen premiere.
The making of Wakanda Forever was a long straining process after the loss of its main star. Director Ryan Coogler ended up pushing for the sequel despite his initial decision to walk away from the franchise. In the end, Wakanda Forever chose Letitia Wright, who played Shuri, to take up the mantle of Black Panther.
